Write quality articles to get long term targeted traffic. Or pay someone to do this. Submit to free web directories that are not spam directories. Post comments on blogs but be sure you contribute to the topic at hand or you'll post and link will be removed from the blog. There are more ways but by searching google you'll find new ways to get your link out there. Also go to the "freebies" section here on DP forum and have fun in there. I find new ways to promote anything in that area.
Make use of social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Furl, etc.. When you try to develop inbound links, make sure that the links are relevant (important). For instance, if your blog is about cars then it doesn't do a lot of good to have an inbound link from a website about pets. Your goal is to get inbound links on sites similar to your blog or other sites that target the same type of people (age, gender, interest, etc.) as your blog.
Write good articles on your topic or market... Checkout the following link for a study on how effective this can be http://www.thekaizenbusiness.com/?p=174
1st make sure your site is something people will wanna come back to. Make sure its OPTIMAL before you promote it in ANY fashion!! (#1) 2nd, after you've made sure your site is looking good, no errrors, loading quickly, etc. send emails to some big sites that are LIKE yours. Ask them to trade FRIENDS links. Usually they'll do it if you get through to the right person. 3rd - Buy Jerry Lee Ford's book entitles, "IMPROVE YOUR WEBTRAFFIC"...it has MILLIONS of ideas that are fast, free, and effective. You will learn how to even get your site registered with MAJOR search engines for free. BUY THE BOOK! You should be able to get it for $20 and it'll be the best 20 big ones you've ever spent!! Good luck, and let me know if there's anything else I can do!
You will learn how to even get your site registered with MAJOR search engines for free So for $20 I can learn how to do for free, something that nobody pays for anyway? Oh great - I'll have 2.

go to Yahoo Answers and start posting answers. find questions that are relevant to your niche and put your website url in to the resource box.
I don't get it. This entire forum is cluttered with the same recycled threads created every day. There are constantly people posting up topics asking for marketing tips, techniques, and tricks. It's all the same stuff. OP, why don't you just read the other 40,000 threads that are asking the EXACT SAME QUESTION as you are? Why does nobody else see this? I can't count how many times I've reread the phrases "quality content", "submit articles", and "social bookmarking".
Actually, people pay for certain spots in line on the listings in search engines. Its pretty basic. You didnt know that?
OK, I am kinda new at this promoting thing. But everybody keeps talking about backlinks. How many backlinks do I need? Can somebody actually give a number please? Are we talking about hundreds of links or, for example, 5 well-placed backlinks. I also have a brand new website and am trying to figure out what is the best way to get people to discover it. Thanks.
