So every 4 years you would get 1 older...so when you are 1 you are actually 4, 2 = 8, etc...

I always lead with how many actual birthdays I've had and after I get the crooked dog head tilt I tell them the "but..."

it worked great/was a big hit with our niece and nephew, especially when they surpassed me in "age"
