$2000 is actually usually a bare minimum. Most projects can cost around 5K upwards. At least, that is what I observed at coder marketplaces....

The important thing is your idea. If you have a great idea, than your chances of success is higher and can compensate for a lower budget.

Thanks for the sound advice :)

My project - well I have had quotes from various people and because it is a niche market in the music industry I feel that I have a good chance for $2000...but of course the more you spend the better the quality :)

I don't believe you can buy 3.0  $2,000 sounds like the lower end, make sure you write out the scope of the project and make sure you're not left with a half done coding project.

I believe you can have that done much cheaper... Simply buy a social networking site script already built, then pay a coder to modify that to meet your needs - cuts down a LOT of the cost and also speeds up the time it takes to get the site up.

Save costs, and then use that saving to market the site! Thats my personal opinion.

Great idea. I wanted a site similar to something like http://www.DopeTracks.com

Is that hard to code for a web master?

It depends really, I can do smaller websites for much cheaper than 2K normally.

PM me if you are looking for a designer/developer. :)

It's really up to the project. Plan on everything you are going to need in order to get it off the ground and then make a good estimation as to what each process is going to cost. Many of people set up budgets and it either is under budget or over once they are finished.

I think you can start a social networking site for much cheaper than 2000. Just purchase the script and just get links, find sites with high traffic and dont worry about PR.
For now just work on link building, I dont think buying adwords or any of those would be benificial, go to myspace and post bullitens for your friends to sign up with you.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You can get one for less than $2000 IMHO.

Install Joomla, buy a professional template for $35 : http://demo.templateplazza.com/comuna2/ <-- Yup, you can get a template like this for $35.

I think the template comes with a social site extension - if not, you can find it at joomla main site.

Pay a coder at elance.com to fix the template a little bit for around $500

And spend the rest on marketing the site.

p/s Don't worry, no affiliate link there. And I'm not related to the owner of the site. I just want to help.
p/p/s Joomla is more flexible and easier to use than before. So, give it a try.

You need a good plan, if you have one you might not need to spend all the 2k
