Write and submit some articles to a few article directories. Make sure they're well written, interesting and about your site's subject matter. They'll often be picked up by other sites and through links to your own site, attract visitors. You may also want to try google adsense to get some traction.
Article submission is a good way to get your site out there, especially if you write up some quality articles. Some good article directories to submit to: www.articleink.com www.ezinearticles.com www.searchwarp.com Article marketing will also help with SEO which will help with your SERPs. Organic traffic from search engines is the way to go. Also, try to get some links to your site from well respected websites--better yet, websites in your niche.
And then what happens if your competitors go to these directories, take your article and swap urls with their own sites in the articles and resubmit them somewhere else?
Good to know I wasn't wacked out and completely paranoid. Then you might as well blast every article site out there ASAP before you GET a competitor.

How about a PR release, Adwords, (you can start with $5), as was mentioned; articles, write up a free ebook with your URL in lots of places, make sure the ebook is quality, not just fluff. Forums, search engine optimize the pages, link exchange, start your own forum on your site, start your own CMS site with links to your site on every page, bumper stickers, tattoos...your ebay "about me" page - (see Jim Cockrum about that one )....safelists.... hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... I think the list could go on for pages.
The basic trick to attract readers to your site is to use a descriptive title, which I guess you are not doing from the title of this thread.
Make some Hubpages. You will receive some traffic from their network. Link back to your site in your Hubpage.
