I believe it does. If the page you posted on gets found by Google or other engines, then your link will be on those pages and provide a backlink.

Great, another thread spammer who just wants to build up backlinks, this is why forums go nofollow in their signatures.

I'm guessing that because I can't see the post you're quoting, the moderator got to them first!

The real value in post signatures is saying some of sufficient value that your fellow members will feel suitably compelled to follow one of your links.

    That's my theory, anyway...

Definitely don't spam the forums. If your posts aren't adding value to the thread, then you'll likely be called a spammer and then given an infraction or banned.

You must write descriptive post which is related to your sig, that will help a lot :)

given that the forum is dofollow and the thread itself is indexed, yes it will count as backlink

I am glad someone asked this, as i thought every post counts as a backlink but also was not sure. Thanks for the answers, please people try not to spam though, as others have made clear one thing we all do not want is a forum full of spammers.
Not here anyways, its too much of a darn good forum.

    Will.

I'm assuming most forums use nofollow but it varies from site to site.

Most forums either don't allow sig links or are nofollow.

Every post counts as a backlink from the same domain. You need backlinks from different sites.

    Agree with Mightyb.

Although all links on this forum are counted, link number 200 (or five for that matter) won't add much value compared to a fresh link from a different site.

Wait wait wait. This is fantastic news... i think.

So, say I'm getting ready to start a site yet I already have thousands of posts, over at least 20 forums, some of which are prime content / howto's that come up in top five google results for certain keywords. Does this mean that just going and adding a siglink to my profiles will result in a decent boost in page rank?

    Willpower,
I don't know if the boost will be big enough to qualify as "decent" for you, but it will certainly support your new site and help getting it indexed very quickly.

Here's a different way of looking at back-links from this or any other forum, and I start with a question: which matters most?

    1. The search engines maybe throwing some link juice your way for random posts with signatures, or;
    2. writing something interesting and drawing your peers into clicking on your links and then doing something once they're on your website or 'blog?

just go to "view source", edit -> find and type in "nofollow", and if it doesn't show up, it's not nofollow.

Not every post, only the ones that get indexed. (Search your username to see a rough estimate of indexed posts, or even search for the anchor text in your sig... remember to add in site:forums.digitalpoint.com)

On top of that, each post can have a different weight. For instance, several posts on the same page will likely not count the same as a post per page. The location of the post also can make a difference. The original post puts that posters sig on top, everything after that is just a little bit less in value.

There is also the matter of human interaction. While a bot may not care, humans certainly do... a post that adds something to a thread above and beyond the sig link is bound to give at least a modest CTR as people will be interested in what else the poster has to say. Where as, a post that just says "PM ME" will likely just be passed over by most humans in favor of the next best post in the thread...

If you are adding to the community with every post, then every post will likely be stronger. The more that others add to the thread the better... as that will get people clicking in through higher SERP. When I first found DP it was through Google, and when I found a good thread but still wanted more information, if I happened to spot a sig related to the content I was looking for I would often click into it.

I still do that, and I'm willing to bet others are as well.

It does not have to be a long post, just a good one...
