Advice Needed - How To Advertise PHP Scripts I'm Selling

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by tyzer, Dec 11, 2006.

    Hi,

i've recently had some success with a couple of PHP scripts i developed, and i have managed to sell the scripts a few times just by advertising in the marketplace on this forum and also on the sitepoint forums.

I didn't really expect to get the kind of response that i did, so it made me think maybe i could make some good money out of this. I never planned to sell these scripts as they were originally only for my personal use.

My question is, what would be the best way to sell more of my scripts?

Has anyone on here sold their own scripts before? and if so, what websites did you advertise on.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

what are the scripts about? Depending on this, you could use several other forums - or set up an independent site, use blogs and affiliate programs, clickbank or other online market places ....

Tried a search of your threads here - and noticed your itrader is at 0 - if you've sold to any members here, get the itrader updated (initiate it yourself for the buyer) and request reciprocation.

A good itrader here can itself help promote your scripts.

Firstly, you would want to set up a website with an overview of the scripts, demos, etc. Secondly, I would do the following (based on the value of the scripts) to advertise:
    • Post on sitepoint.com marketplace
    • Post on DP and other webmaster forums
    • Google adwords
    • Hotscripts and other script sites
    • Banner advertising on related sites
    • Establish a demo version and place a banner so users can buy script

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've been thinking of listing on
SitePoint, but the marketplace didn't look like it got much traffic for
    script sales.

If you don't mind me asking, how well did your sales go?

The two scripts I have, are a text ad network script (like my website adquick.co.uk and adbrite.com), and also a weight loss tracking script, which can be seen here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=194023

I used the Sitepoint forums to advertise my website adquick.co.uk as i was thinking about selling it, and although my advert was for everything including the script, domain name and customers, i actually got a lot of private messages asking if i would be willing to sell the script on its own and thats what i did to two people for a 4 figure sum each.

I've heard of script sites like hotscripts.com and php.resourceindex.com, but i was wondering if anyone can recommend any other script sites like this one.

My plan is to setup a website which will showcase these 2 scripts aswell as any future scripts and on here there will be things like demos, screenshots, feature lists and the option to buy the scripts. I will then list them on as many script sites like hotscripts.com, so thats why i am trying to get suggestions for as many alternatives to sites like hotscripts.

Make some small but usefull scripts for free for a specific niche. Give them to websites in that niche and ask them to offer the free scripts to their visitors (eigher directly from the website or through mailing lists). You will get a lot of visitors this way and make more sales.

Make more script and start your own script shop, then promote your script under your script shop name. It worked like that for me :)

I would recommend sitepoint, they draw a lot of webmasters looking for all sorts of products, and many of them sell.

Hows about benefiting long term aswell by developing your own personal website to sell the php scripts. This would for one promote the actual website and in the future increased links to the website and page rank and seo means the site may be worth something, secondly you can show of the site as a personal portfolio for your scripts which in turn may increase sales and also just direct people to the website set up an automatic selling script for paypal so people can buy the scripts straight from your website.

    Will.
