I personally feel that the posts appearing in so many sales threads asking for a free review copy do nothing for either the seller or the forum in general. So my suggestion is to ban entirely, people from asking in sales threads for review copies.

Should a seller wish to give out some review copies then they could add in their initial thread that this is the case but the user must PM them for a copy.

That way, the thread stays 'clean' and the seller can deal with these requests privately.

I agree with that to be honest, it gets boring looking down the threads and seeing the same thing over and over, especially when the user requesting a copy has only 2 posts and joined yesterday.

I think the suggestion about the seller offering a review will work well.

if the seller clearly said "no review copy", infraction should be given to those who ask as thread hijack

As a new member I have spotted this very early on.

It is annoying especially when I have to trawl through the threads looking for a buyers review etc. This could have saved me some time by not having 4 pages of "Can I review"

Nice to see you putting your head above the parapet so early into your moderatorship! :p

I agree entirely with everything you said. I think I posted the same suggestion a few months back.

I think an instant "BAN" is way to harsh! This is ridiculous just give infaction should take care of it.

There's a parapet? lol. Just making a suggestion same as all the other times. Not to say it will happen but it would be nice to find out if everyone else thinks the same as I do.

Review copies help build credibility for users offering a product or service though; it's a very important tactic for n00b members with no reputation and no iTrader to gain some credibility and trust in DP's marketplace.

I say we shall let review copies stay, however, the seller must be willing and wanting to provide them.
I find that review copies should be promoted for n00b sellers.

Just my two cents, but it makes sense.

Not saying people shouldn't offer them, only that review copies may only be asked for via PM.

Im not sure on this. I buy a lot of ebooks and I know many users and sellers are happy knowing people like me and Jimmy have given it the thumbs up.

If the seller states no review copies, then fair enough. But when they leave the question open its their own problem. They usually state the decision quite soon afterwards anyway. Its lazy cheap asses like myself that use my DP status to gain free copies :D

Having said that I'm always honest with my reviews. If the sellers asks for a nice review and their ebook is crap I don't hesitate to tell them.

As long as the seller has the option of offering review copies, I would support the ban. And the seller should state that review copies can be requested by PM only.

The idea is to remove the avalanche of 'Review Copy?' posts, not prevent sellers from offering them - that's up to them. It would be much better all round, imo, if people wanting a review copy PM'd the seller rather than posting to ask for a copy.

The reviews themselves would be unaffected - those who received a review copy would of course still add their review.

    That brings back around the

"mess up my PM box" vs "mess up the sales thread" argument....

Not really. If the seller wants to offer review copies they should be prepared to take a few PM's about it and if they don't want to offer review copies they can simply delete the PM's. ;)

Good point. I think the OP would have to be allowed to re-post once saying "no more PMs please" without getting hammered with a bumping infraction.
