Good CTR

    Hello!

Since CTRs do influence my Quality Score, I'm wondering what a good CTR is.
Will a 0.5% CTR for example result in a good or bad Quality Score?
Is this also depending on the keyword?
Assuming that a 0.5% CTR is bad - what happens when all my competitors have
a even worse CTR like 0.1%? will my Quality Score suck, though?

    Thank you,
    Pflaume

0.5% isn't a very good clickthrough rate, but how bad it is (and hence how much it affects your Quality Score) depends on the position that the advert appears. In 8th position, it'll probably not be too bad (your minimum bids may be £0.05 or £0.08, though obviously it depends on other factors as well). If you're first, and get a 0.5% CTR, you're going to be in trouble - I've not been there, so I can't guess how bad it would be...

As a very general rule of thumb, I look for a minimum of 6% from top position, and 2% from 7th or 8th...

I see. Thank you very much for clarifying this!

When I talk to people they seem to make the impression that the CTR doesn't affect the QS too much, except it's ultra high or ultra low.. what would you say how much percentage of the Quality Score the CTR is?

    Thanks

Also I read in a lot of affiliate blogs that a important strategy is to bid extreme high for a specific niche to be in the first positions, and after a week or so the average cpc will fall naturally due to the so extreme good CTR... (I guess in #1 topspot u can get up to 20%).. so this is their tactic for successful adwords marketing they explain...
So they actually claim that the CTR is not standing in relation with the position, is this bullshit?
I can imagine that a 20% CTR can be nice for the account history and so on, but because it stands in relation to the position this is not better than a 7th position with 5% CTR, right?

In conclusion: Do you really have an advantage being in the 1st position (what meets Quality Score) or is this a Myth?

CTR varies from industry to industry. Google actually implemented something called position normalization meaning that each keyword in certain positions is expected to get a certain CTR based on other advertisers history. So 1 keywords might have a CTR of 1% in position 3 while another might have a 5% CTR.

However the 5% CTR can actually be a bad CTR if other advertisers usually get a 7% CTR

The 1% CTR could be really good if other advertisers can only achieve a 0.5% CTR. So there is no real answer to this question and nobody can say what a good CTR is.

I understand. Thanks for explaining that detailed!

So the average account CTR is not playing ANY role I guess?
(heard that it influences the account history which affects the QS, but this would make no sense anymore)

Its not the account average CTR its the account average quality score of all quality scored holistically.

QS is assesed at the following levels

    Keyword
    Text Ad
    Adgroup
    Campaign
    account
