Just thought I'd post up a positive case study to counter some of the ne’er sayers who seem to frequent DP. I build websites; not overly complex sites, just general sites for small businesses. I always do some ground level SEO work on each site to give it a fighting chance, not least of which is to include a new site in www.jooomla.co.uk, my own directory. Last weekend, I finished this site. I also added the site to the directory. Less than 4 days later, the directory ranks at 1 & 2 for the search term 'lionheart rosettes' - the website is not yet ranking for its own site name, I suspect because of its age. Conclusion? If you have a new website, a directory listing will help to promote that site & drive traffic to it. I'm sure there are other conclusions that could be drawn from this and would welcome your comments.
Nice to see another positive review about directory value. Congrats. And I am sure, it is equally good for old sites.
Hello... Why how dare you post something "positive" about directories... lol Directories have always been the organic way for achieving better rankings and whether its a general or niche, free or paid, new or old, with or without PR, the link still counts providing its relevant to the category selected and seo friendly and one of the best economical solutions in back-link building... thx malcolm
Thanks for sharing your results with directory listings deebee. I too believe directories have their purpose and are part of a well balanced seo strategy.

I love the site you did, Great work, don't like the play on joomla for your directory though, that's bad, but my own opinion there. I ran some stats for you and saw you only have 8 site links in Google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:lionheartrosettes.co.uk. The reason your ranking so highly with that is your domain name contains the both keywords your searching for, pretty obvious really, its something a bad company from the UK used to do when selling links in their business directory used to do. for example they'd sell a plumber who plies his trade in the 'back of beyond', the domain 'plumberinthebackofbeyond.com' then when the obvious happened and Google indexed it they claimed the extortionate fee was part of a parnership they had with Google. (Of course this partnership never existed they just hit on the fact the domain name still ranks highly despite what people say). You should do very well with your site, not just because of the use of the domain name to match your product but the fact you have an excellent design of which I for one would certainly buy from. Well done. Conclusion: Your domain name is what is doing it, not the directory listing althought that will certainly help.
Nice site and glad to see that directory submits and a good domain are helping it to grow. While the domain name does help for ranking; a link from an existing, regularly indexed site will give it a better chance of being found by the bots. You might want to go over the on-page content, seems like there's a problem with some of your punctuation being replaced with ?
hell, the more backlinks you can get, the better. i don't think you can get penalized for having a backlink from a site?? maybe a spammer site, but if that happens they only penalize the spammer site, not your site.. and since you are listing in a directory, its just more links for you!! -Saam
I wonder how many people search for "lionheart rosettes?" I'm just not familiar with what they are or how popular they might be...
Jamie, I think you have misunderstood the OP's post. The domain, or newly developed site isn't the one that's ranking. It's his directory jooomla.co.uk which is appearing in number 1 and 2 for that search term. Therefore showing that directories can still pick up good rankings. Of course your right on the money with the domain name and it will eventually be 1st because of the keywords being the domain. Although, I just checked the SERPS and jooomla.co.uk is still 1st and 2nd and this thread is now 3rd. Your new site might get some competition from DP!
A few benefits of directory listings: • Getting new pages indexed quickly by search engines • Improving your ranking in the search engines • You'll get some traffic, especially from higher-quality directories • For some of my search terms I've seen on Google's first page anywhere from 4-6 directories with my search term in their listing for me.
Directories are still important because you get thematic links, different IP links and it also drive traffic if directory is niche specific.
