v7n.com is being sold by John: http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/auction/20949 I think the start bid is a little to much. What is your opinion?
This is top news Thanks for the 'heads up' At that price expect to see it snapped real soon Well done John
I noticed this last night and showed a lot of my friends on YM/MSN. I think the starting bid is too low. John says the network makes $20,000 - $40,000 a month. For a solid site with such great assets and a history of good revenue I believe it will easily sell for 10-20 months worth of revenue.
Nice find, it's always good to have a laught in the morning. This may be a case of overvaluing something? Asking that much I'd want to know it's tax history, company accounts, how much outgoings to income, projected earnings, any staff involved, and so on. It's all well and good it having a fair traffic stream but the membership isn't massive, they don't pay a monthly subscription, not that I know of and so on. Possibly a publicity stunt but you never know so wish the guy well. If that's worth 500k then I'm gonna be a very rich law student.
Hello... Wish john a speedy sale and "full amount" as its worth at least that with all the work he has invested over the last few years... much success with the sell thx malcolm
People here say it's over-valued. My opinion is that 500k is a small price for that, really. V7n is one of the biggest webmaster portals on the internet and earnings are big as well. It worths more then 500,000$.
wishing john a good deal! v7n is a great webmaster portal! The directory of v7n itself is worth a lot! and v7n forum is one of the most popular webmaster community around! also, not to forget the contextual program of v7n is good too!
Obviously aimed at me and I don't mind your disagreeing with me. I was brought up in a family with large business' so tend to know what things are worth and what they aren't worth. It's my genuine opinion base on no facts that it isn't worth 500k, if it generated a good stable revenue it has potential but nothing more. All said and done though I do wish him well as lots of work has clearly been put into it.
Why don't you think its worth it? There is so much potential there for more revenue. The forum currently doesn't make much. I think if done properly another 25k or so could be made a month from the forum. It wouldnt be hard to start a newsletter and get sponsors. Extra advert slots, more promotion of the directory etc. I think 400k is a small price to pay for one of the largest webmaster forums around.
I must agree but take in mind that incoming revenue does play a large part in the sale of any company and how its measured. Do you think yahoo is worth 44+ Billion ? yes B not million evidently MSN feels its not at this time and made an lower offer.. In the end its the buyer whom actually forks out the money that will decide wether its worth it to them or not after researching the stats associated with sale. thx malcolm
The forum currently doesn't make much. So is worth nothing. The instant they start charging on this area the users will wander off quicker than they come. Forums are non starters, the bigger they get the more expense to run them, the profit margin is simply not worth it. Advertising is the only real viable option here but again your hitting a very small niche of webmasters which would be of concern to any investor. He was asking 500K which is far too high for a non earner. Why do you think it's for sale? Sure the answer is going to be something like "I have other more important things to do" or the like but in reality it just isn't bringing in the coins. I wish the guy well, he's done a lot of work but in the cold light of day a member base is vanity, it doesn't pay the bills. The rest of the 'network' is just trimmings, the directory isn't worth anything and neither are the rest of the gimmicks unless they earn money. At best they provide stickability for the visitors but even then they are again a select bunch of non spenders. Getting REAL sponsors isn't easy, the problem being that the only sponsors he's likely to get are all in competition with each other. To make it easier to understand, let's use Man utd as an example, AIG insurance sponsor them, part of their conditions was that no other insurance firm could sponsor them at the same time as they are competition. The only sponsors v7n would be likely to get are webmasters who frequent that type of forum, they don't have pots of money to throw at it. You only have to look at the advertiser on the right hand panel to see the level of sponsorship this thing gets. One was a clickthru to Amazon, one an afflilate link, one a tiny directory, the rest are his own banners touting for business. It's a case of look closely enough and you'll see it is definately not worth what he's asking. But hey, I may be proved wrong and that would be fantastic for the owner, I doubt it though. @Malcolm, Yahoo are a different thing altogether, the demographic audience is massive, the advertising potential limitless, this isn't the case with v7n as explained above. On point you made which was good was that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I don't see it going for that but I am hoping to be wrong.
I think that what all this underlines are the long term issues facing the "general directory" In particular, the "general website link directory", a new species which spawned the search engine an has been eclipsed by its progeny,
this is one of the biggest community online so i think it should find a bidder but i dont think the bidder will display a public bid. I think this site will be sold privately. Just my prediction.
I agree with SMUB; that traffic and community def. has value, but the site will sell privately for an undisclosed sum .. and most probably for less than half a million
Isn't Jeff of aviva a partner in the contextual program? Is he a potential buyer as well? He already bought sevenseek and umdum from v7n.
He may be interested but 500k is a lot of money for a directory owner I also expect that if Jeff was going to buy the site they would have dealt privately. From what I've learnt from experienced buyers and sellers (like that fellow Man Utd fan that I often speak with ) its often best to sell large sites like this privately.
lol, not happy tonight, they drew. You are right though mikey, you don't wash your linen in public if you can help it.
