Why Does Linkedin rank higher than Facebook in SERPS? (Expert question)

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by mberman84, Feb 12, 2008.

I was wondering if there were any SEO guru's out there that could give me an answer to this question:

For user profiles (people search), why does linkedin (and other social networks) rank higher in the SERPS for people searches than Facebook. Facebook has more inbound links than linkedin, but linkedin still seems to rank much higher.

    Any help is appreciated.

bump...anyone got an answer to this?

could it be because there's a ton more info on the profile pages of linkedin versus facebook? a person's name is mentioned once or twice on the facebook page with no other info as opposed to linkedin where the name is mentioned many times and lots of job history info is listed.

    please help:)

It's hard to link to someone's profile on facebook because they are private.

I'm talking about the public profile pages though. Linkedin vs. facebook specifically. They are made for the SE's.

    What do you mean?

Well facebook.com/profile.php will return, for the most part the same, unchanged text since probably 90% of the profiles on there are private.

I don't have much idea about facebook and how it works but common sense says why should facebook profile pages rank higher than linkedin or putting it better way, why shouldn't linkedin profiles rank higher than facebook ?

In terms of authority they both are same. Alsmost all the profiles have none backlinks (actually linkedin profile do have backlinks because most pros linked them from there blog/sites). And really, it is just that search engine believes (and fair enough) that linkedin profile is more useful.

It is alot like why so many wiki pages ranks very high (since 2005) when they have no external links over many pages which have good backlinks. Search engines believes the wiki page has better info.

that makes sense. what about compared to other social networks? facebook never ranks highly for any name search. is there one specific (main) reason for this?

Simple: profiles are usually private or are restricted to a network and are not well linked. A simple search for "site:www.facebook.com john smith" will yield people named John Smith but you won't be able to see anything about him except for a picture and a network because it is only a public search listing.

A search for the same name on linkedin yields a page with much more information about the person.
