How do you handle Spam submissions?

Having run a couple of directories for several years I have found spam submissions to be the most frustrating part of running a directory.

My question is how do you handle spam submissions. For example I recently had to deal with a problem where I was getting 100 times more spam submissions than usual from automated means.

The spammers are wasting their time, their submissions are never listed so why bother. I only approve manual submissions.

I do realise they can bypass any submission protection but it is quite easy to figure out the mass submissions even when they do use multiple IP's.

Anyone else fed up with spam?

I bought a spam guard mod. I don't have to deal with it. Time = money and in this case my money saved time.

Use some limit on PR, add hidden empty fields (if filled - was automat).
Those are simple methods for unexperienced, but helps a lot.

Spam is most common issue for every webmasters not only directory owners. The problem is that most of software they use is more clever to bypass for example captcha image.

So the question is can we stop spam issue? No, is my answers as long as everyone wants to spam, the spam will be there. I personal don't think we can stop it, but we can reduce or maybe make it harder for spammers. As long as the money is there we can not stop it. You can update your directory to a better version but it only helps you for a few days/months. Spammers notice it and change there codes.

I can agree with that they will try their hardest after noticing that you have modified to reduce the numbers
then they counter attack and send more.

Theres ONLY one way to keep it from reoccurring in any directory script and that is to PAY first then submit your info
But this would not help the owners whom wish to offer FREE submits...

I know i may sound like a broken record as ive mentioned this a few times but nobody seems to want to come forward
and invent a solution to the problem for phpld script and after hearing what shutzu said im not sure what to think...

    thx

I like it, it makes me feel wanted and needed, im honoured that they include me in their spamming list. :p

Its not too much of a big deal for me, i dont get that much, but dont have anything special in place to stop it either.

How do i handle it? quite quickly, i delete it, same as i bin the pizza leaflets that come through the letterbox.

You think the pizza guys would check addresses once in a while and notice ive never actually ordered from them ever. ;)

Some nice ideas, unfortunately (or fortunately) I didn't go down the PHPld route and coded a client side app. I really need a PHP solution but my PHP skills aren't up to it yet.

Should really find out more about GET and POST.

Nice to see everyone has time over from deleting spam to post on DP :)

Why not turn on captcha? At least for a little while. It might get you out of their rotation.

If your capthca is turned off , for a while turn it on and you will see considerably less spam for sure.

I don't get a whole lot of spam submissions, and for a long time I've used the approach of having multiple methods of identifying which submissions are spammy. I think if you rely on just one thing, like only turning on the captcha or only installing a word filter, it's not going to be good enough.

Cannot do much about spam except by turning on CAPTCHA. So far that has helped.

Spam can be simple to deal with or you can complicate it, me i keep it simple by setting a standard ie: sites need to be pr4 and above. so i scroll down checking all links that are below that and delete.... I know what your thinking why delete all those submissions below pr 4?. It's because i went down the road of accepting pr 0 1 2 and 3's before as a result i went from a pr4 to a pr3 along with a reduction of all my internal pages.
So the best form of defense is keeping the standard high which should make your job easier and faster!. Spam is traffic what ever way you look at it, just delete it.....
