I Want to Start a Hosting Company

But I have never done it before. Costs should be minimal, being that I will be designing a coding the site myself.

Where is a good place to start? What are things to look for? Should I buy my own server or get a master reseller account? Who would you recommend? How much should I invest? What are my chances of success?

I don't know the first thing about getting a reseller account. What is WHM? I know what cPanel is, and fantastico.

Start with a reseller, and some billing software such as Clientexec or WHMCS.

Get a nice site - this is vital.

Get a niche, or a unique selling point.

SEO your site, get traffic etc.

    Then upgrade in this path:

Reseller -> VPS -> Dedicated -> Multiple sevrers -> Clusters

mate, the best thing to do is go to www.hostgator.com and read all the information on the WHM and reseller deals they have.

also, try speaking to them on the chat function, they are super helpful! Also, DONT custom code a site yourself mate, why spend all your time reinventing the wheel!

I want to code it myself because I don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. Thanks for the link.

before moving to your actual company, try to resell some other products, so that you dont have to invest too much, and from this way you'll gain much exp to open your OWN.

I disagree highly with your comments on a custom website.

That site represents you, now if you look like every one else, what's stopping customers from going to you hey?

I'd recommend doing plenty of research into the field. Everyone hates a bad host, and one disgruntled client can tarnish your reputation forever. Its unfair, maybe, but the market is saturated, and someone has to lose.

Focus on good deals and customer satisfaction. Many hosts offer practically the same plans at the same prices, but the differentiation is at the customer support.

do NOT do anything until you have a detail plan. You can be a good coder. You can be a good designer. But you cannot be a good business man if you dont have a good plan. I would advice you spend your time on this web http://www.resellerguide.com/ They have many useful articles for starters. Read about the basic stuff in hosting industry, set what you want to offer. When you have all your requirements for business starting, then you can find out which vendor is the most suitable for you

WHM is the Server Admin and Reseller component of cPanel.

If you are serious about it, you should really get a VPS account or Reseller account and learn the ins and outs of it first. Remember that customers who host with you would depend heavily on your expertise on their livelihood. Because if problem occurs with your server or account, you will get a lot of mad customers. If you cannot resolve the problem, you may have a number of customers going out of business and money.

If you know that you can do a great job and providing at least 24/7 prompt support then go ahead, if not, it may not be a good idea not only for yourself but your customer.
