There has been a lot of fraud in BST section specifically the DOMAINS section for LLLL.COMs in the last 48 hours, with rumours of hacked accounts and so on.... I have seen about $2,000 in attempted or perpetrated fraud and someone has also tried to defraud me personally of $630. The issue is that paypal will always return money to the sender, and godaddy will never get involved in a problem between members. As it seems to be such a hot issue at the moment could a MOD please put a sticky in the BST section, preferably in the domains section, saying that paypal is NOT safe for vendors, and if it is a sum over say $50, then MB or escrow should be at least considered. That way noob's wont get burned, and the whole forum is safer and more user friendly. Anyway, just my suggestion, thanks for reading. MOG
Or perhaps vendors need to do more due diligence when accepting offers? I've never used escrow but when I see some of these bigger values being bandied about I wonder why people don't use it more!
Well, yes Sarah, but the problem here is that scammers are using DP hacked accounts... Here's what I would do: (you might think I am crazy, but this is serious, I mean REALLY SERIOUS) Create a Public announcement on ALL FORUMS asking users to change their password withing a week Send a PM to all users asking them to ready the announcement so that there isn't even a chance of a hacker to change a link
yep, I was approached concerning a thread where I am selling 15 premium domains, all 3char.nets and 4char.coms by a user with 1500 posts and 20+ positive Itraders - we agreed a price for the domains and he sent me $630 by paypal. LUCKILY I was having dinner so I didnt see the transfer straight away, in the half hour I was off DP he reversed the transaction. After doing some digging about I have found 3 other people that this same user has defrauded in the last 24 hours, and one of them was worth $760. have a look at the thread "felics is a scammer" under the domains section of the BST and you will see further evidence. ALSO: Another "buyer" contacted me by PM and offered me $350 for some of the domains, I accepted the price and then when I told him that they were regged at snapnames he pulled out saying that he would only deal with godaddy domains - it is widely known that GoDaddy will NOT entertain any discussion about fraud, basically, "you sent it, your fault" is their motto. When I tried to persue this further the person did not respond to my PMs despite being active on other threads trying to buy more LLLL.com's For some reason there has been a big flair up in fraud on the domains forum in the last few days, so I feel that time is of the essence to add a sticky for at least a few weeks to let everyone know. I will even go NOW to the section and add it myself, in the hope that nobody else gets defrauded out of a large amount of money today or tomorrow. thanks MOG -----------*********-----------**********-----------********** ADDED TO ABOVE POST AT 13.00BST -----------*********-----------**********-----------********** I have created a thread about this specifically at the domains section, to try and help any noobie (or more gullible regular like me ) not get scammed in this recent upturn in fraudster activity. I respectfully suggest that a MOD sticky's it for a week or two, the thread is here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=6580693 thanks again MOG
stuck and closed. discussions about escrow alternatives etc should be in their own thread in General Business.
thanks for stickying it, lets hope it goes at least some way to reducing the current tide of fraud in that particular forum! Re, escrow discussions, point taken and I will restrict discussion to the appropriate threads! thanks again, MOG
Setting a dollar value for when you should use escrow isn't realistic. The "real value" of a deal depends on your current wealth, age, country etc. After all $100 to a high roller in a casino might be a trifling, $100 to a beggar on the street would be substantial. We all fall somewhere in between. Escrow is there to protect us when the deal's value goes from trifling to substantial!
Very well put sarah, +rep! While $100 or $200 realistically isnt the end of the world (especially when living with UK prices!!) I appreciate that many people here on the forums are either living in parts of the world where a hundred bucks has a lot more buying power, or might be students/youngsters etc. At the end of the day though, no matter how much the amount, being scammed does leave a bad taste in the mouth and its the kind of thing that would put people off a community such as this and it is our responsibility to protect people as much as possible I guess!
