Im looking for a DVD player that can play XviD/DivX files but also has a USB port where I can hook up an external hard drive and it plays the movies off of them. Ive seen DVD players you can do that with a flash drive, not sure if an external hard drive would be any different. But if you have seen something like this or know it exists please let me know.
If they are able to play from USB Flash Key Drives (little ones) and the external hard disk connects through USB, then yes. But only as long as the external hard disk connects through standard usb and not something else, it will effectively be a massive USB key.
I see. Been reading though that the hard drive needs to be formated in FAT32 and a bunch of wierd stuff to make this work. Would think by now there should be a DVD player that I can just hook up a hard drive, turn it on, pick my movie and it plays.
Yeah. I just checked my External USB Hard disk, it is formatted as FAT, it doesn't say if it is FAT16 or FAT32, but I assume 32 because it is quite big. Also, some USB hard disks you can just plug straight into your PC and they will be deteted automatically, these should work on the USB flash key DVD players. But some external hard disks like mine, come with installation CDs that you need to run before the hard disk will work, these won't work with the usb key dvd players. Yeah, it is a good idea.
