Is it worth buying DP avatars, say for instance if I was just about to launch a services, if I was to buy say 15 of the top posters avatars, would like do my projects any good? I know that this wouldn't bring in too much traffic, but surely spreading the brand name is important too? Would you say buying avatars on DP is good for making your name brandable?
If you think it will help with your brand just test it and see! - Experience will tell you If it was me, I wouldn't go near it.
Yep, buying avatars sure help to create a brand! but i would suggest, not just go for the top posters rather, try getting as much as you can. The buzz will create the brand name!

the avatar needs to be catchy.. it needs to catch the readers eye in such a way that they would check your site. If you can get this to work then its worth buying.
I would say yes. When TMX launched their website they bought a lot of DP avatars. TMX is pretty well known now and that was only about six months ago.
Avatar effectiveness depends. I think for DP, Avatars relating to webmaster and products or services to that effect will help, but others may have less impact. It is more for visual appear and adverts rather than for SEO effects.
Avatars are just to establish your Brand. getoffers.in is one such URL which is with avatars of many DP members!
Agreed with above. If your avatar looks good, and is in multiple places it's going to do the job just as any other ad would. Only annoying thing about avatars is they're non-clickable, you'd have to have your url in your avatar for anyone to know your exact web address. ie: see mine.
