Here is my opinion: Vista: Uses a language that anyone familiar with windows can understand and figure out with hardly any learning curve. Has all of the most common office programs with it and is being added onto with the newest game software made directly and strictly for it. Linux: Uses a language only network techs and some solaris admins can comprehend(also previous linux users), and has a good bit of a learning curve just to be able to install a program or even run a windows made program. Open source, and is updated by the people (a very good plus). Free. Uses mostly open source programs with it (also a very good plus) however most of which will not be 100% up to snuff with microsoft office without at least paying. (open office is pretty close, though.) If it was not a matter of cost, I'd go with vista. However I know a bit of unix and have fedora, unbuntu and solaris 10 desktops. So since cost is in the matter I could go with linux easily as well. However just because Vista seems to hold more promise than anything linux has shown me in a few years (already having games and more updates) I'd say vista is a better choice. How About you?
Not comparable, you should of put a version of Linux and Vista since there are different versions. Plus Linux is much more varied since it is open source and different companies release their own versions. But I will say Windows for ease of use, and Linux for strength, power and reliability.
If I MUST choose, then I would go ubuntu, rather than putting my grandmother in wages for buying me a new computer, to support Vista's requirements. To me Vista is like slithering caviar between my Toes.
i'd like to have ubuntu on my new notebook but there always is some compatibility problem so next time i'll buy a notebook with linux preinstalled. Vista works fine to use internet and office programs (openoffice is not that good), but only on new computers and home premium version lacks of many standard features, in example the fax.
To be totally honest I think Vista is great I have used it for ages now and it hasn't failed on me once. If you don't want Vista to run slowly get a computer that is above it's minimum requirements, works a treat.
I use gentoo linux om my workstation, laptop and 2 home servers. I manage 18 gentoo webservers for a friend of mine. I have WinXP in a vmware to test some things once in a while. But I don't have the need for win anymore. Everything I want to do I can on my linux machines. I've been using linux for 7 years now, I don't feel at home in a win environment. For me a linux desktop is much more productive then win.
why in the world you're comparing it? if you're just an average web surfer, for sure you'll go for vista. however, if you're kind of a geek, or a guy who knows much with computers, internet, dns, web server administration (or even someone who's just interested in those field) then he should go for linux. well for me, vista is just for a web surfer, or a chatter.
Everyone seems to think wistfully that they should have linux, and constantly abuse MS for it. Realistically, most people aren't good enough with computers (not people here) to use Linux, but the smarter people will have the option, and thats what I think Linux was made to be, an option for people intelligent enough to understand it I use Ubuntu Just as a note, that wasn't a crack against people on Vista, it's a choice to have Linux, and its not for everyone
Ubuntu Linux anytime over Vista. I'm keeping XP if I need windows. Ubuntu is getting better and better with every new version. I run 7.10 as my main desktop. I have been testing all the Alphas of 8.04 and is great.
Linux for me and Vista for my GF But seriously, it is not an accurate poll as Linux is not by any means a desktop standard for the general masses who just want basic things from their computer.
hmm...i would choose vista only because 99% of programs are made for windows. they have a monopoly on the market which doesnt really give us a choice.
You cannot compare Windows and UNIX based system. UNIX based systems have totally different architecture. They are more reliable, more secure, faster and easier to customize. On the other hand, they are not as easy to use mainly because hardware vendors doesn't support them so community must make their own drivers... And no... linux isn't harder to learn... it is just different... And usual pc users who grew up on windows just cannot addapt to different feel and so on...
For me it Linux over vista its just much better at the things i do on my computer like coding. vista just looks good slows down your computer its not made for the computer Pro people but people that just use there computer to look at a few websites chat, games and things like that. but xp is still very good M$ just did not think out what they wanted to get out of vista they just made it to get some more cash. if a big company like dell what to go back to xp what dose it say for vista ? my computer is way over that vista needs to run but is just dose not run as well as Linux or xp dose but also what am i getting that is better in vista for the slow Speed . mind i do use xp/windows for a few things you just need to pick what is best for the jobes that you are doing at the time. i mostly only have xp for Games and a few things i may need that i can not run in Liunx or even MAC. you just need to chose what is right for you.
True BUT unix architecture is more secure mainly because you are not acting as root all the time as in winblows... you must type in password to become root and once your root order is finished... unix swithces you back to user account... That is more security. Of course if linux was more widely used, there would be much more viruses and spyware but imho less than are here now for windows.
