New Forum Suggestion - Social Networking discussion

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by MOG, Feb 14, 2008.

    Hi Guys,

something that I have long thought missing now is a FORUM (I know the title is wrong, sorry!) specifically for social networking development/discussion, which would include discussion on:

    facebook
    BEBO
    NING
    Orkut
    Myspace
    OpenSocial

    and others.....

For one, I spend a lot of time over at the ning developers forum and the facebook devs forum, but DP being a much larger more inclusive community I feel would benefit from a thread/section of this type.

perhaps one day a specific social networking section in the BST area would also be warranted, but for now I think that a social networking area would at least be a good start?

    howsabout it? who agrees/disagrees?

    thanks!

    MOG

Do you mean a new forum rather than a new 'thread'?

Exactly, If you are talking about a forum, Shawn can see about it...And that happens if many users support, I presume..

And if it's a thread, you yourself can start it mate..

    Cheers,

    -Wiz!

So including me thats three scots all in this thread, is DP exclusively being broadcast in scotland today or something?! LOL!

Anyway - I do think its a good idea, and it is spurned somewhat by my getting infractions for discussing the sale of a facebook app in the "sites" section of the BST, which lead me to think that we need a wider social media category within the forum to deal with this emerging but increasingly popular theme.

If if does get created I reckon I should have a sticky post in it as it was my idea! (ok I doubt Id get that but it would be a nice though...) :D

I agree to have separate Social Networking discussion forum which will be having
orkut , facebook etc as subforums :)

some times orkut , myspace discussions will be in traffic , general chat sections
so its better idea to have separate forum , subforums :)

It has been suggested before and shot down. I do not think they are willing to add any new forums or sub-forums at this time. It seems to be any new forum or sub-forum suggested for any topic is quickly denied.

Great idea, I just do not think it will happen.

A social networking section would be a good idea. Dunno if the servers can handle it though - DP is running rather erractically these days.

I'm speculating that new forums aren't going to appear anytime soon because of the current load on the servers. Perhaps that's incorrect but it's my best guess.

a simple answer to that problem that would no doubt save a small fortune would be a discreet footer link saying:

"this forum is powered by HP/DELL/SUN/etc. servers".

I am sure that most tech companies would kill for that kind of exposure.

ANYWAY - How many people would have to agree that this is a good idea before it could be looked at seriously by the powers that be, whether it shawn or a few of the senior mods?

Not so much how many people agree, more about whether it is considered a good idea for the forum and won't cause problems or issues. All suggestions get looked at and considered so long as they are reasonable and pertain to the general webmaster area (and are anatomically possible :p)

Sorry, I have to disagree with that sentiment, I feel that there is easily sufficient demand for social networking forums, check out how busy http://networkcreators.ning.com and http://www.facebook.com/developers are - both these forums are exclusively for webmasters and developers for social networking platforms, and BOTH forums are populated with lots of DP members.

Also the trend towards social networking is only going to get stronger in the coming months and years, so I feel strongly that DP should stay at the forefront of the webmasters forums crowd and incorporate these forums now.

I would add a poll to this thread, but I cant now..... but supporters please feel free to leave positive comments.

    thanks

I realise that is what you mean, but I still disagree and put forth that you're underestimating the growth in social networking webmastery.

Probably 80% of what I do is now based around Ning or Facebook, and Im just getting to grips with opensocial.

There are literally HUNDREDS of DP members frequenting these other forums, and in my opinion the whole DP community would be well served having these discussions here at "our" forum rather than at the others.

Probably you wont agree regardless of my arguments, but I really feel that if the time has not come now for these new forum areas to be launched, then certainly within the next 3 to 6 months it will start to be a hinderance to digital point that they do not exist.

After all, they would be more popular than quite a few forum areas!!

You'll have to show many examples where a current forum is crowded with these types of threads. If its the case, a new forum could be added.

Hi Mikey - :D good point, I dont think there will be many threads full of discussion about social networking as its not permitted in most forum area's, as an example, (if you are a MOD) check out the infractions that I have received for making an OP about facebook apps in the wrong section.

I am sure there are lots of other examples, but perhaps in this case we might just have to agree to disagree! :D :D

If it gets added, it will get spammed by the "free stumble" users, which is why I think this category suggestion is a bad idea.
