I am totally confused on how to check how many backlinks a website has!

I am hoping to figure this out once & for all

Ok, if I go to google and put in:

    link:http://www.boston.com 47,200 links

And the answer is different everytime... some times its a million.... sometimes i just put in boston.com without the http:// and there are 500,000 backlinks

Any idea on the most accurate way to check a websites backlinks?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to Yahoo and type in
    link:whateversite
    Code (markup):
It will give you more accurate results.

I just went to Yahoo and put in:

    Link: Boston.com Inlinks (47,100)

    Link: http://www.boston.com Inlinks (3,300,000)

I guess the lesson is always add http ---

However... do you think this 3,300,000 is accurate?

When I put in http://www.boston.com into google... (105,000) came up

Is google trying to prevent this info --- or does it have a problem calculating it?

    Thanks!

Google doesn't show all the backlinks. Google does however take them into consideration...

That is why I suggested you check Yahoo...

    link:http://www.yoursite.com

Agreeing with others recommendations, if its a site you don't own, yahoo is easy and decent.

If you own the site, Google webmaster tools is the ticket.

    Hope that helps. :)

i think the difference between link: site.com and http://site.com is in way the site was linked
google doesn't show exact amount of backlinks especially if the amount is huge
i would multiply x5 google data

Our company takes into consideration both Yahoo and Google when looking at backlinks since some backlinks hold more weight on certain search engines which is why Google will typically show less backlinks. It also depends how the link has been coded. Keep your links consistent! Thats why you will see variations using link:www. yoursite .com and link: yoursite .com

Remember, how many link you have is not as important as how many links you have that count :)

View links trough toolbar (link:sitename) can not get all links, will shows only the latest indexed back links. if use any other third party tool or webmaster tool will get accurate. cehck it on "http://www.seologs.com/link-analysis-tool/backlinks.html"
