hi, i have a dedicated server running server 2003 and when i log in through remote desktop i get a notice that there are updates available. i am hesitant about doing this from the risks that it could cause some downtime for the server or maybe cause other problems. is it ok to install updates on a live server? or should i take it offline, install updates, and put it back? thanks
It should be fine to run the updates. Make sure to reboot the server after the install. If the sever doesn't come back up call your host for eyes & hands support. Server failure (after an update) has only happened to me the once in over 2 years, I was running a shitty script.
It will bring downtime for your customers. If you're using for you only, it's fine. Sometimes, you just need to restart some services after software updating
Yup it will but onlt for 1 - 2 minutes and the reboot can be performed at the quietest hour of the day, if its such a concern.
Now that does put a different spin on things and I can see your concern. If anything I would install the updates on a test server first, you can then see if the update prompts for a reboot. With that you can make a decision for your live server.
Well I have been needing to make a scheduled maintenance on the server so I will let the listeners know a few days ahead of time, do whatever I need to do, install updates, and go back on air. Thanks for all the help though...
