It seems to be standard practice for Dmoz editors to remove sites that have been sold due to it being a shortcut into the directory. So I ask, what do you all think will happen to Yahoo if Microsoft buys them (Microsoft to buy Yahoo )? Should they get delisted, like other webmasters? As heh, Microsoft would be buying a "shortcut into the directory".
Well, I've seen several people complain that they bought or sold a site that was listed in the ODP only to have the site removed. I have also seen several editors claim that if they know of a site that changes ownership they will remove the site because there are no shortcuts to getting a DMOZ link. It only stands to reason that this would be treated fairly... don't ya think? I mean, I'm sure that the only reason that Microsoft is wanting to buy Yahoo is because its listed in the ODP
Kinda makes sense.... Cuz you could buy a site...and completely change its contents....maybe make it into a porn site lol. Thats prob why DMOZ will remove a sold site. You dont know what the new owner will do with it.
Exactly, and as they generally remove a site before waiting to see what is done with it, it only stands to reason they should remove Yahoo if it's bought out by Microsoft. If you bought a listed site it would certainly get removed. If I did, I'm sure it would get removed. Though, heh to make budalata happy, if Skrenta bought a site it would get 10K deep links (LOL). So I guess it's really hard to tell what will happen, though as I assume MS is not owned by an editor, it should be treated accordingly, and if they buy Yahoo, Yahoo should be removed.
But I think DMOZ will try to make the exemption with Yahoo...but if they do...I say we start a petition and force Yahoo to be removed...hehe Or if they do remove Yahoo...it will probably be back up within 24 hours lol.
They will let it stay, that you can likely be sure of... They do not care what anyone thinks other then themselves. In fact, heh, on some level, they don't even care what they say. It would take more then 24 hours to move them or put them back up...Yahoo has many MANY links.
What kind of life must one have if their daily routine for over half a year involves devoting hours griping about something as mundane as an internet directory. __ Sad __ Really Sad __ More predestined to failure than a Dennis Kusinich fundraiser __ Jerry Springer thinks you're too much of a loser to go on his show LOL. Good God kid, at least take a break occasionally.
You seem to have an amazing knack for making personal attacks when you are confronted with something that would make you or the directory look bad. Could there be a reason for that other then you simply being a troll? Now if you don't mind, there is an actual topic here. If you don't have anything to share on that topic, then why do you keep reminding me of topics in other threads? Seems that you have some SERIOUS double standard issues...but then, that's obvious, you are a DMOZ editor
So if my company decides to go and buy out a DMOZ-listed online garden-retailer site, you reckon on that front the site should be removed from Dmoz because you don't know what I'd do with it? I slightly see your point, as most dropped or bought domains are put to sinister use - but I believe Dmoz should draw a fine line over when a site is bought by a related company/individual and is displaying very similar content to the previous owner. Ie. mygardensitewithgardenginformation.com shouldn't be used as a general web directory, it should be used for a gardening information related site.. Sometimes Dmoz editors don't draw a fine line, they draw a knife fight. [That said, sometimes they draw Get Out Of Jail Free cards, too. Ps. I voted Yes, one for all and all for one]
Cool I'll give him all my websites for free just for the fun of it! p.s. When Skrenta sold Topix it didn't get delisted instead all those links got updated from .net to .com.
Naah, just pointing out that the topic is as frivilous as the one posting it. There isn't a policy involved, just case by case calls made by editors. If you don't think editors should be allowed discretion, start a directory and do it your way there. Had you just come in to post today because this was a "serious issue" concerning you, you might have a tiny shred of credibility, but as you come in every single day multiple times to complain... the only people that think you aren't grinding an ax because you have no life are the same guys that consider professional wrestling to be real.
It is real - what are you talking about??? At the end of the day, you can't have one rule for a guy with money and another rule for a guy without money. It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft do buy Yahoo and if they do change the domain - then what will the ODP do? Dare I say, open their pockets a little wider, I say.
Yeah, yeah, attack my credibility by pointing to nothing but the double standards of the ODP. Yeah, that'll teach me a lesson! Now, if you don't have an ax to grind with me then why do you come in to all of the threads I start and make personal attacks against me? If you don't have an ax to grind with Digital Point, then why do you try to take every thread you post in off topic? Now come one, case by case basis? If that is the case, then Nebby was correct, following the guidelines to get a listing in the first place is "shakey advice".
Not only do you start a thread on a false premise but you also start a poll. At least you acknowledge that you don't know what you are talking about with the second poll option.
Oh look, it's the nameless editor that says following the guidelines to get listed is shakey advice Nice of you to make it into this thread. Though, is what I said here really false? DMOZ watching us?? You'll see in the thread above that sites do in fact get removed for being bought and sold. You'll also see that several editors back up such things happening. So again, I come with proof of what I said. And again, Editors come in to say what I'm saying is false. As I am saying nothing that editors have not said, I'd like to once again point to the double standards of the ODP.
Actually I only drop by this forum occasionally to answer questions and correct mistatements, misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and the occasional boldfaced lie. The fact that it so frequently happens in response to one of your posts isn't a coincidence, just a matter of weeding where the weeds happen to be. Even then I can't possibly respond to every instance you offer, heck, that'd be a fulltime occupation. That pretty much ends my brief visit... enjoy the rest of the day, some of us have things to do.
You are a confused little fellow. I don't really feel like holding your hand and explaining where you are misguided, but if you were to sit down have a nice cup of tea and ponder the difference between a domain and a site you might be able to work it out for yourself. Oh yeah, any advice that anyone gives that does not take into the account the uniqueness and value of the content of a site is indeed shaky. You still don’t get that obviously.
Funny that I often am found to be posting mistatements, misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and the occasional boldfaced lie...when I am quoting editors. In fact, I have pointed to posts of yours and have been called a liar...does not say much for what you say does it? Though, if I am spreading lies in this thread, mind explaining the thread I linked too? Or other sites like it that got removed for being bought or sold? In fact, mind backing up a single post you have made with something other then a personal attack? Or, heh... to a post where you are actually helpful? Again, if I am wrong here, then why do these things happen? If I am wrong in the other threads, then why do those things happen? Explain how a post from me is a lie, but a post from an editor saying the same thing is some how the truth? Seems to me you have once again confirmed the double standard. It's nice to know you think it's a lie when I say something, but seemingly OK when another editor says it ~ even when that editor is you! No wonder you hide behind a fake name here. You keep saying that people do not have to follow the guidelines to get listed... oh wait, unique content IS in the guidelines, so just how was me saying to follow the guidelines wrong? You, like Mr. Jones are nothing but a troll. Saying time and time again that I am wrong, then backing up editors that say the exact same thing I have said.
