So... Lots of content

I know lots of content is good for SERPS.

But I'd like to see how many of u think it makes a big difference?

Say if I build a site with 6 pages, would it really make much difference if I ramble on for another 10 pages just for the search engines?

Comments on your experience please :)

No, it wouldn't. You want quality not quantity.

Always start small, but think big. Over time, as you write more good relevant content, it'll start to build up (obviously) and you'll start seeing the best of both worlds (quality and quantity).

Oh, and 6 pages doesn't sound like much. To me that would be a home page, about page, contact page (complete with form), and about 3 other site-specific pages.

If you are not good at SEO a lot of content is good :) For example forums have a lot of low quality content but still they receive a lot of visitors :)

What I usually do when I build a website from scratch is the following:

Decide on 6 keyword phrases that I choose as my MAIN keywords
Then write 2-3 pages for each of these phrases with a good keyword density, h1 h2 tags etc... basically 2-3 pages optimized for the certain keyword phrase.

Then I should have about 12-15 pages of good quality content for the search engines which would help it rank high.

After this, I then focus on quality content for the human eye.

Pure rubbish. Whether you're new to SEO or an industry veteran, quality content will trump lots of content any day of the week, unless the bulk of the content is high-quality content (and by the time the blog/site has that kind of content it'll already be established).

As for forums, they tend to get traffic from four types of people. People looking for help, people looking to help those in need, people who are interested in engaging in conversation, and spammers. As far as the first three groups are concerned, they'll only come if the forum is active. Spammers just won't care.

Come on Guys/Gals, There are many other factors to consider like....

What key phrase your website targets

    How competitive the niche is

    how optimesed the content is

    how the website is structured

    Internal link structure

How often you add or update content

    Outbound links

    inbound links

    Domain name

    and so on.....

I can make a 5 page website that targets a long tail key phrase (3-4 words) with little competition and get it to page one of Google
within a couple weeks... How do I know this?... Because I do it all the time!

I think the best way to understand content is to look at the major news sites - bbc, CNN, reuters etc. They have fresh content going up daily, but the main reason they have such high rankings is because they attract valuable links for the quality and relevance of their news

You can't game the system for long. Your goal is to make money. At the end of the day, it all comes down to somebody paying you for your work. Whether somebody pays you by clicking a relevant adwords link on your site, buys a product you have for sale or buys from somebody else through your aff link, you are there to sell. Bad content doesn't sell; that's the bottom line.

Ok, so what sells? Interesting content sells. Useful content is interesting. Funny content is interesting. Well written content is interesting. I spend an hour on a site last night reading about blue-ray. I don't give a rats-ass about blue-ray but it was an interesting read. I didn't buy anything but because I know that content was original and a good read I clicked on an adsense link as a "thank you" for not being ordinary.

Sorry for the rant but MFA pages are usually crap and strongly dislike crap. If you can work your ads into good content then you are infinitely better than the pack of sites out there that truly suck eggs.

    Hope it helps,

    David

Keep adding content over time. Remember fresh-quality pages are being indexed and timestamped by Google right now and I see this being more a part of all search engines as they scan daily for fresh new information from quality sites.

To bake a perfect cake takes many ingredients, no point in arguing what is the best flour to use if you don't consider all the other ingredients - Lots of unique content, no site issues and good links pointing to your site is your basic flour, butter and eggs !!
