Sure! But you need to ensure that the domain is registered under you and that you are given the domain information for eg userid and login password. Normal hosting companies will give ftp of the form yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.com depending on how they are setup

most give you the "free" domain so you're stuck with them for as long as you want to keep the domain

The most important thing in online business or just owning a site is the domain name. So, always register your domain names separately using big domain registrars like, godaddy, moniker etc.

Most probably you will not be allowed to transfer your domain and you will be charged a heavy price when you want to own it and move to another host.
You will always get that ftp URL whether your domain is free or paid. This is related with hosting and not with registration :)

    Good luck,

Ask them! I will only let my host register a domain for me if they'd do it under my name (which an ethical company would want to do anyways) and let me walk away with the domain after the terms laid out. Dreamhost is one company I know that does this. :D

Most companies does that, although I heard once in a while of companies who register their clients' domains under their own names, and when the clients wants to leave, charge them an exorbitant fees to get back the domains.

It's not about trust or not, just register elsewhere and you can't be wrong.

Leave all that aside, you dont own the domain, if u want to sell it, you cant.. and to buy a domain its really cheap.. so why bother?

the question itself doesn't have a unique answer

the correct one would be "do I trust this company"?

read the user agreement and make sure you are the registrant (and not them) so you can move away whenever you want

I use to get all my domains with a company separated from the one that I get a hosting account with exactly for this reason, and because if you're moving or selling the domain, the process would be faster

again, this is just my though, it might be fast and with no pain also if you got a free domain with a company, thing is you get it free, they pay for it so if you want to go away and bring it with you before a full year is passed...they won't be happy obviously and might try to keep you as customer even if you have decided to go away

I have a domain name reseller program through godaddy. I have a customer that picks a plan with a free domain name. I send them to my domain name site, have them purchase the domain name, and come back and order the package. Once i go to the admin section of the domain name site and verify they have purchased the domain name i refund in full from paypal, the cost of the domain name so the customer feels comfortable that the domain name is registered to them.

If a web hosting company does not have the reseller program it is likely that the domain name will be register to them and not your name.

You can make sure of that by just running a Whois to a domain registered by them, and see to whom its registered

That's too long process. We were used to register the name instantly and activate hosting account together as our system combines both at a time. But we discontinued 'free domain' offer as we strictly follow 56 Days PayPal MoneyBack warranty and were loosing funds.

Sure.. you can trust them.. its a part of their promotion.
You can transfer that domain to other registrars also.

Yeap as long as they register you as the owner, I don't see any issues at all, it is part of their extended services. Nothing sinister, although there are bad hats registering under their own names, but these are few and a google will show up these scams.

Mostly they will lock the domain, ask money to release it, will not provide secret key to allow transfer even if it on owner's name.

    Good luck,
