Are directories necessary for SEO?

I have not had the time to submit my sites manually to directories, and have been getting decent links elsewhere. I am wondering if links from directories will give my serps a noticeable increase.

 

directory submission is one of the seo technique to get backlinks and backlink is one of the factor to improve page rank. so if you do directory submission it will be beneficial for your site.

 

I had noticed that it is more valuable than link exchange. It is one of the main source to gain one-way link. But you should judge the right directory for submission. Directory submission is not dangerous so you can submit your link anywhere but please prefer the directory regularly updates the listing else the wasting of money and time.

 

I've noticed that MSN and Yahoo respond to directories quicker than Google. I just paid someone on the DP forums for 1000 directory submissions, with 3 titles/links. One of the titles instantly shot to #1 and #2 (plural) in Yahoo after the directory submissions.

Look at it this way: it doesn't hurt.

Personally, I don't bother submitting to directories, except the bigger ones. It's a waste of time, almost zero traffic and spammy.

 

i dont think that directory submission will give more weight. i submit my site to some special directories only which is shortlisted by me after long research. rather than i go for other link building strategies.

 

I knew of a site that submitted itself only to zero-value free directories, and had pretty much no other inbound links, and lost quite a bit of ranking on its key term. Not necessarily related, but the free directories certainly improved nothing. I think good quality directories however are a good base of one-way links

my opinion is that just submit u r site to 10 dirs a day, so that they will help you in getting back links as well as will be the door for Google to visit out site from the directories too.
