What in the hell does a police officer need a machine gun for? NYC is not a war zone. It seems to me to be the potential to cause a lot more problems than it could ever possibly hope to solve. There's no reason for it. And we should always err on the side of freedom, not on the side of a police state. It's amazing to me how many people don't understand the basic importance of freedom. The basic rights that any free society should be based on.

Yes I would. I think the problem is not the people it is the society that conditions the people.

You are right, I think it is a sociological problem, not a mental disorder. Glad we can finally agree on something today. :D

I was on the Port Authority Path interstate subway in Hoboken NJ and there were armed National Guard at the entrance. It's probably something to do with Super Tuesday.

You have to remember too that there is a war goung on.

Yes, the endless war against Osama Bin Hidden, and his merry band of bathrobe wearing cave dwellers.

    Good point.

Yes. You are right. I lived in towns without Police and there was an absense of crime. Anarchy works when people come to agreement and live together in a functional society.

However you are fighting human nature in the big cities.

An absense of police will led to gang control until people organize militias to suppress the gangs.

I was in a place called newport in the UK
a few years ago and the G8.
Cops everywhere with Hocklers, Steyr SSG,
plus the stuff inside the vans you
It was a few days after London bombing.
A Afgan looking guy walked in front of the car,
    with..... a large rucksack.....
Must have been 100 eyes just watching him slowly
    walk past.
    Poor guy was scared shitless.
They didn't stop him as he was just a walker.

A lot of Supermarkets have armed police as security. A find that a lot stranger than police on the subway.

I don't mind having policemen in the subway. But do they have to be armed like they're going to war? What can they possibly achieve with machine guns in such a tight and crowded space that they can't achieve with a pistol? What's next? Tanks in the middle of road intersections?

The US Police are way behind the curve of using automatic weapons. It pretty common for the Police in Europe to be armed with Uzis or MP5s

In the US, we are at war with an unpredictable and ruthless enemy. Subways are a prime target.

here in Romania I've only seen jandarmes armed with automatic weapons (romanian made ak47s) but they're only allowed to carry them during the night. I actually asked one why they don't carry them during the day and he said it's because it's practicly impossible to use it during the day in a city. How is the US police going to use automatic weapons in such a congested place such a underground station or train

OK, but how is putting ridiculously armed policemen there going to help? People go to subways with hand bags or small rucsacs all the time, it would be easy for anyone who wants to carry a bomb there to succeed without the policemen noticing anything

AK-47 is very inaccurate. The M-4 using a 5.56mm round is a lot more accurate than a pistol. A bullet is a bullet.

New York has thousands of miles of subways. It a lot less congested than you think especially at night.

The guns are not really used much or at all but its a show of force and strength.

Its more of a fear tactic. And i think it will work.

If a gang member sees a cop with a machine gun/ well a subway guard. They are going to be more scared then when there just carrying a pistol.

    Intimidation is a successful tactic.
