Based on your previous experience, have you has better results with natural search engine results or from using PPC programs like adwords, YSM etc.? I have personally had better results with SEO and have managed to get a steady stream of 6,000 unique visits per day. I have alot of experience with over 10 different PPC programs and I may someday go back to them when I have found a really high converting website.
It really depends on the site I am running. Some sites I build are meant for PPC, like one-page arbitrage sites. However, as a general rule of thumb, even if I plan to promote a site through PPC exclusively, I will always optimize it. It's free, and it helps.
SEO is better from my experience. It takes time and effort but it worthwhile. PPC is good for gain quick traffic and controllable ads position. As long as you have a budget and knowhow to bid then you can still on the front page whether algorithm or Google dance won't be effect on your site. But as we all know, PPC clicks fraud still a major issues for advertiser and sometimes it may consume much money than you can made from your site.
In my opinion, PPC should only be used for keywords that are difficult to obtain through natural SEO. By "difficult" I mean it is hard to get on the first page without using advanced SEO.
I think that you do not have to think about whether to have a PPC marketing or not. This is because the ultimate objective of Search Engines promotion would remain reaching the top results. If you have the budget, you could have the Paid marketing benefits, otherwise invest accordingly and wait for SEO to show results. The alternative which has the most preference is the combination of both. This operates PPC at the onset, while waiting for SEO to bring the results.

PPC can be very expensive these days, difficult to profit and lots of 'non-customers' clicking on your ads in competitive niches. It's great to test ads and get quick traffic, but only if you can afford it. SEO is best for long-term results, but don't get caught up in latest fads to try & trick SEs. Put the work in, give them what they want, and you will see results. For best results you need to structure your site correctly around your keywords and have plenty of related backlinks to your site on those keywords too. Don't forget all the FREE traffic from the Web2.0 type sites, it's got massive potential! Cheers!
