Opinions on gimp

    If you cant afford photoshop and need to use a free product is gimp seen as one of the better ones or do you have any other faves?

    I think it should be the best. Am having no problem with it.

    Gimp is the only sensible alternative, hard to use, much steeper learning curve but worth it considering the price of Photoshop, and once you get the hang of Gimp, nothing prevents you from creating anything except your imagination.

    I've been using the gimp for several years and I love it. I've used PS a little and PS does have a lot more features but I prefer the gimp hands down. Fire up a copy of the gimp then google "gimp tutorials" and you'll get the hang of it.

    Excellent, im happy to read that people are not looking at gimp as a poor mans photoshop but instead actually love it and prefer it in some cases, il look for some tutorials to get me started.

    I don't see it as the Poor Man's PS, I see it as the Smart Man's PS.

    If there's an open source project out there that performs at or around the same level of a (very expensive) proprietary alternative, why wouldn't you use the open source?

    I use Ubuntu Linux on my main machine now instead of Windows. I use Open Office instead of MS Office. I use Quanta instead of Dreamweaver. I use Gimp instead of PS.

    The programs are all free to use and open source. I love the fact that the programs are regularly updated - and I never have to pay to jump up to the next major version.

    You may also want to check out Inkscape for illustrations (comparable to Illustrator).

    Yeap same here same reason why I use Open Office instead of Microsoft Office , it is a Smart Man's choice :)

    Great post, your right i agree, if its available then make the most of it, i will check out Inkscape too, thanks.

    Cool :) i should check out more of these open source options for various work.

    If you want a more usable alternative to Photoshop, I'd really recommend Paint.NET. I found GIMP completely user-unfriendly. But then I just use PS!

    GIMP is the best open source image editor available; I believe. A bit different from PS. But wouldn't term it as a tough-to-learn alternative + downloadable plugins :)
