Mitt Romney is suspending his Republican presidential campaign after a disappointing showing in this week's "Super Tuesday" primaries and caucuses, party sources said. Romney is expected to announce his decision later Thursday in Washington, three Republican sources told CNN. full story http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/07/romney.campaign/index.html
It's now official. He's done. The last thing America wanted was another hard nosed conservative that wouldn't work with democrats to get things done. I'm still waiting for Ron Paul to drop out. Maybe he's hoping that with only a couple people left he can get some bigger scraps with third place finishes. We'll see if Anne Coulter starts campaigning for Hillary.
This is quite interesting because I think most Romney supporters quite dislike McCain. But that being said I don't see them being huge on Huckabee or Paul either. This will be very interesting to see where his support goes to. Overall it's probably a bad thing for Huckabee & Paul as it will make it easier for McCain to reach the delegate level he needs to avoid a brokered convention.
That is a little surprising to me...I really didn't think Romney would be dropping out so early...Interesting news!
Without a brokered convention, the race would end. The matter is very urgent now. We can convince Romney supporters to support Dr. Paul. He is the only real Republican in the GOP. Let us wait and watch. i'm hearing Romney right now, LIVE. he was talking about all the points Dr. Paul is running on... economic competition, illegal immigration, tax reduction, entitlement mentality of people... almost mimicking Dr. Ron Paul.
"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror." He ran a terrible campaign and that's why he is dropping out. F*ck Romney! One less wacko to worry about.
No you can't. Conservatives support the war on terror, the war in Iraq and fighting Islamic terrorism. He put that focus in his speech because he knows that McCain is strong on that area. Romney specifically mentioned increasing our military. Ron Paul supports the exact opposite of that. Ron Paul needs to drop out. At this point I'm not sure he'll be re-elected as a congressman. Too much dirt has been revealed. If he's lucky, Texans believe that despite making a terrible president, he makes a good congressman. Conservatives will support McCain because things are being done at the state level on immigration and they believe the economy will work itself out like it always does. There are also local Republican candidates that havn't dropped out around the country. There are only two national Republican candidates left. Ron Paul is a non-candidate as he can't possibly win anything. People actually vote for Huckabee. When Ron Paul wins a state then you can call him a candidate.
YES!! The republicans are fucked! Mitt Romney was their only hope and all those conservatives at that convention where he announced he's a quitting failure knew it! There is NO WAY McCain could beat Obama or even Hillary. Not supporting the war like he does. They'll just call him Bush II and call it a day. Finally this country is going to turn things around.
I think this dramatically increases Huckabee's chance to get the nomination. I think that the evangelical group was split between Romney and Huckabee. We will see though I suppose.
McCain is most likely to beat Hillary. Most people don't want Health Insurance forced down their throat. Especially the people in the middle class living paycheck to paycheck as it is. It's a very real choice for middle class people: a house or health insurance. We pay about $1150 for our house payment. Health insurance at the time would have cost around $700 a month. For other middle class people it costs even more. So they opt for the house and hope they don't get sick. If you have a family even a two bedroom apartment costs at least $800. You might as well buy a house at that point. Hillary will force people to choose health insurance and since they "make too much" they won't get a break and they'll lose the house they're in or not be able to buy one. If she could set a maximum price she might get more support. If I knew that Hillary was going to provide good health insurance coverage at $200 a month I wouldn't be worried about her. And neither should the rest of the middle class. It's not terribly hard to find $200 a month to cover health insurance. I got lucky and found a job that has excellent benefits. So now we're covered and it only costs a couple hundred a month which we can afford. Obama might be a little tougher to beat but he's more liberal so the moderates will probably go for McCain instead. Huckabee is in the running for the VP. The idea is to show how much support he has so that McCain can be confident in him as a running mate. You don't want a VP that can't win votes.
Kalvin, you have absolutely no concept of what (1) real conservatives are thinking, or (2) winning strategy for the GOP. That said, this is really interesting, because a lot of Romney delegates list Paul as the second choice. I have to look up if Mitt can direct their votes to another candidate, or if they become unbound.
I agree with this. I don't think it's quite as over as people are thinking it is. I can imagine Huckabee putting up a good challenge now that Romney is out ... we'll see. Also a little side note: People are wrong to compare the Dems rift between Clinton/Obama with the Republican rift. The Clinton/Obama thing is more about which person they prefer. The McCain vs Conservatives thing goes a lot deeper than that. It's a real problem for McCain. Also a real problem: Obama just raised as much money in 36 hours as McCain raised in all of January.
Absolutely no surprise at all there. EnRom dropping out has played right into the Democrats hands because far too many people will not vote for Insane McCain.
Neo-conservatives aka neocons. Of course they support them. They created them. The jury has not yet sat down to sort out the mess in Louisiana. It's quite possible that Ron Paul won that state.
AFAIK, Romney's delegates are bound to him as long as his campaign is still active/suspended and not completely done. According to this:
And those are the ones that supported Romney. The moderate Republicans support McCain. Most people are not against the war, they're against the handling of the war. That's why Romney ended with his focus on the war on Terror and McCain's ability to handle it. There are no polls from Lousiana and the primary is on Saturday. Ron Paul will probably have a great showing and finish third. I think you're referring to some other state that Ron Paul lost in. There are so many it's hard to keep track of them.
McCain's advisors are a who's who of neocons including Kristol - son of the godfather of neoconservatism and a grade A ahole IMO. Unfortunately, McCain, Romney and Huckabee all are influenced by the same group to different degrees: All Presidential Candidates Use Neocon Advisers, Except One You obviously don't have clue what happened during the Louisiana caucus.
