Your 13 years as an ISP/web host won't hardly get you in the door of a CIO of a Fortune 500 company I'm afraid. You go tell ExxonMobil, WalMart, P&G and others that they need to tell everyone to run *nix and they will laugh you out the door (if security doesn't haul you out first).

Before you will EVER see *nix as a large player in the enterprise there will have to be Enterprise-Level development of *nix platform enterprise management services. And I'm not just talking firewalls and network monitoring devices, I'm saying applications that can compete with the likes of Exchange, Systems Management Services, Altiris, SAP, and the list goes on......

Linux as a web server, great, I love it, as an core-1 enterprise-level platform? Forget it.... face the facts, Microsoft hardly blinks an eye when hundreds of thousands of consumers buy Macs because they OWN the enterprise and that's where Bill Gates & Co make their money.

Which is why I am so surprised at the blind loyalty these cyber dorks all still have for Google. Google is just the next "greedy corporation" to come along and try to dominate - they are no different than Microsoft, Apple, Sony, (insert your most hated oil company's name here)...

I agree too. I didn't like it a first but now XP just seems clunky.

I think most of this 'Vista hate' stems from people with outdated machines trying to run it. Wake up and smell the Coffee, single cores with 1gb of ram are toys compared to Q6600's with 4gb of ram.

Anyway, how can you hate an OS? Grow up.

    Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 4MB Cache
    2GB Ram
    256MB NVidia Video
    7200R Sata 2

Way beyond good specs for Vista and it will not touch my PC even for Free.

I dualboot Debian and XP. I would switch to Debian full time but I love gaming. XP is old but its still great.

I am definetly NOT moving to Vista. It came with my laptop and it was TERRIBLE. Everything was really slow. So I booted up the PC and made a Debian CD. Popped it in and voila! An excellent OS.

Being retired does not mean that all XP computers would stop functioning or that there would no longer be updates and bug fixes, it just mean that they will no longer be selling any computers equipped with Windows XP.

However, the official support for it would still extend to April 14th 2009 and extended support would be till April 8th 2014. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?sort=PN&alpha=windows+xp

Basically, it means no new features after April 14th 2009 but there would be security updates till April 8th 2014. By which time, I would probably change all my current computers.

I tried Ubuntu but couldn't get anywhere and the worst part is that I cannot do my online banking. In the end, I guess it is really not for everyone.

First of all it isn't expiring so soon , they still have to release the XP service Pack 3 which will take sometime and then wait till it reaches out everyone ,and by that time hopefully Windows Vista will be much better and in reach, if not i am sticking to windows xp ,ill continue using the Service Pack 3 until Vista is a bit better and then make the switch to windows vista. This Ubuntu and other Stuff they are all making it look cool only its not that good.

Linux, I've used openSUSE and it's amazing. Everything you need, Linux can do.

The other alternative is Mac OS leopard, a very good operating system just expensive as you have to buy Mac hardware. If you have the money though, go for it it's worth it.

    @up

Sorry, linux can't do everything I need.

Where did you get that from? I tried out vista on a 4gb ram Alienware vista laptop. It sucks ass. So many network issues it's not even funny.

I hate Vista, but love my XP, and will keep it as long as possible. I have two copies of vista that I don't use because it just slowed my computers down, and was locking them up.

    VISTA SUCKS
