    Hi

I am from canada and have a bunch of hunter friends. I constantly hear them complaining about new laws coming out restricting their rights and freedoms when it comes to owning a firearm.

The excuse the government gives is that it will allow them to control crime better. What I find interesting though is that 95% of the guns used to comit crimes are in fact... unregistered weapons. How does that add up?

Let's look at texas. Probably the least amount of restrictions when it comes to owning or carrying a firearm, yet their crime rate is lower than most other states.

What is your take on this?

Do you think the government has gone too far? Are they really infringing our rights and freedoms? I am just plain out curios what you think!

Amen brother! I live in the USA baby, we love our guns, i think every household should have a firearm. We have a few for protection, since our neighborhood has been kinda rough, double homocide in our neighbors house. I know in one county they make it a law that you must have a firearm in their household..guess what, their crime rate dropped dramatically!

I travel a lot, and I always carry a firearm when I legally can. Now in UK its a minimum 5 year sentence for possesion of a firearm!

I don't have a gun but I do agree that criminals do not follow restrictions and laws anyway so if somehow guns were banned, only the lawless elements will carry them.

It can't be any worse than the UK. We have the most archaic, ill-conceived and ridiculous firearms legislation anywhere in the world. The reason? Some lunatic, who the Police knew was a lunatic who shouldn't have weapons, went into a school and killed a class full of kids and their teacher. So because the Police couldn't do their job properly every responsible and law abiding handgun owner in the UK had to forfeit their weapons.

Has gun crime decreased since then? What do you think.

We're good at knee jerk over legislation in the UK!

Thank God for the US Constitution. It is our right. I feel sorry for those in countries where it is forbidden.

Exactly. There's always going to be someone harming/killing others with a gun.

I'm also not convinced that every home should have a gun. If it's within reach, the risk of misuse is much higher.
Here in Belgium a few years ago after a some suicides/family killings by policemen, it became a law that policemen weren't allowed to take their weapons home after work. From what I hear it drastically reduced the number of suicides and such.
There will always be lunatics, depressed people, and yes if they really really want to they'll use knives or whatever else, but having a gun within reach makes it just too easy.

Having a lot of people with guns will make criminals more agressive. Now there are quite a lot of carjackings/housejackings (criminals breaking into houses to steal nice cars). Usually there isn't any violence involved - they break in, owners are mostly still asleep, car keys are taken and the cars are stolen.
If everyone will have a gun, burglars/criminals/thieves/.. will probably become more agressive.. if they hear any sound in the house they won't silently go away like now happens but may shoot at the house owners..

So having guns isn't better - if you have an expensive car worth stealing it's almost always very well insured, so it's better to just have it stolen and report it to the insurance company than to risk your life or die because you heard them break into your house..

What should be clear however is what one can and cannot do in the event of a burglary..
From what I heard, in the UK if you use a baseball bat do defend yourself against a burglar, the bat becomes an illegal weapon and you can be convicted because you tried to defend yourself. That's crazy.

In Belgium a few years ago a juweler was convicted because he shot robbers in the back when they ran out of his store.. you can use deadly force to defend your own life, but not to protect your possessions.. the judge decided that at the moment the thieves ran away his life wasn't in danger so he shouldn't have shot them.

On the other hand I'm not against ownership of guns - if people really want them for any legit reason (hunting, sports shooting) they should be able to do so.

Well shooting someone in the back is illegal. it is considered they are trying to leave the situation and your life is not endangered. Me I will shoot you first and ask questions later. I am glad I don't live in Washington DC because no handguns are allowed at all and every rifle and shotgun has to be registered and you can not keep it loaded. I hate Washington DC. It is the central government of the United States and it technically is not even part of the United States. It is District of Columbia whatever the hell that is.

I'm a born and bred Texas boy and there are actually states with looser gun laws then Texas and Alaska is one of them. My stance is this. If you want my gun then you are going to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Gun laws have been implicated in countries like Australia.

Yet a lot of criminals there still have guns.

    Its a no win.

Trust humanity, peace and common sense prevails.

Another thing about the criminals having guns. I never seen a criminal yet who went to wal mart or dicks sporting goods to buy a gun. So I go in there and I have to go through a background check and a waiting period to buy a gun. I ain't a criminal and any gun I buy is for hunting or home protection but I have to put up with the third degree. The damn homie that goes and murders someone with a stolen gun though is the guy that don't have to put up with the shit I do. People wonder why I think it should be perfectly legal to kill gang members and terrorists.

I ain't gonna get on a rant here because it would last all day.

Your points do make a fair bit of sense.

What are your thoughts on the Italian Mafia than?

    Its really a sub-culture.

    ?

    Worried about them having guns?

Hell I forgot about the mafia. That is organized crime though. They do hits and not just show up in a car blasting at a house like these home boys do. Unless I make a deal with a don or something then I don't have to worry about the mafia. However working security in some of the places I do then I do have to worry about being in the crossfire of two dumb ass rival gangs. The mafia does not concern me because they keep to themselves. Bloods and Crips will shoot each other in a parking lot full of kids and they won't care.

I live in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania region now and last month in Pittsburgh there was a 12 year old girl shot dead because of a gang related drive by shooting. Her mother was in critical condition last I knew. Bad part is the gang screwed up and shot the wrong house. There were two SUVs exchanged 11 shots another time last month and also I got called to a post where three guards quit that day because the night before 5 shots were fired. It was probably two homies fighting over a crack rock because that was a high crack head area. There was a crackhouse right across the street from my post.

None of it bothers me because I have been in South Dallas and once you go to South Dallas Texas nothing will scare you ever again. For those that are in the US if you have ever seen the show Dallas SWAT about 90% of those calls are in South Dallas.

Why would somebody carry a firearm all the time? Are you living in the wild west or what?
