Google will not stop giving PR

    Hello all,

I occosionally see people sugesting Google might stop giving out PR readings.

I don't believe this is the case because of all the browsing data they can collect from giving PR. When you enable PR in the toolbar you get that warning that you must agree to indicating that they are now collecting your browsing data. This data would be very valuable to them, and harder to justify collecting without the PR reading on the toolbar.

Therefor I don't think they are going to stop giving out these numbers.

    Whats your thoughts?

I don't think they'll stop using it either. it was probably meant as a gimmick but just skyrocketed in popularity amongst webmasters no matter how relatively unimportant it is and is one more thing they have which the others do not.

There is an entire industry thriving on the concept of PR. Its a nice montizing option for me. I hope Google lets it stay the way it is at the moment.

In a way PR numbers are just like Alexa ratings... a 50,000 foot view of the significance of a website. Especially when considered when numbers like backlinks, it can give you a great quick and semi-complete picture of what is going on with any given website.

Google should increase the importance of PR, so we can sell links for higher price :p (This does not conclude that I sell links)

Like everyone has been saying, google uses the toolbar as a means of getting user information. They won't discontinue it anytime soon.

Google wont die if they stop PR. I think Google realises that to many webmasters will have nothing to talk about if Google kill the PR.

Even though Google has stated that they strongly discourage the practice of text link sale based on PR. They wont kill it due to the financial benefits they get from Adsense and what not.

lmfao 99.9% of the people on the internet don't know what it is. They won't care. They like the pretty search and gmail button.

Beyond that, no, they probably won't stop showing it. Why? Because it keeps people hypnotized. And it's a useless measurement. So why would they stop showing people something that distracts them from doing significant things?
1)The data on it is hopelessly out of date
2)The ACTUAL pr is a lot more complicated on a scale MUCH larger than 10.
3)It doesn't really impact rankings! Take as many links as you like, and you will not be ranking without proper anchor text. So buying a high PR domain is [almost] pointless unless you're keeping it within the same niche. Look at the "buy viagra" search engine results for example. A fairly large percentage of those have no PR at all. Go ahead, test your PR6 whatever against them, see if you rank. You won't.
4)An ever increasing portion of the high PR domains can no longer pass it along to anyone, because at some point they sold links, got link spammed, or got picked up by a domain squatter and lost the ability. And there's no way to check, so you can't file from re-inclusion.

As long as they show PR, the more they can distract those who know no better with the pretty emerald bar. They will not stop for a long time.

Heh there's a response I didn't expect here ;) Congrats. I have a new respect for at least one person here. I die a little inside every time I see newbies crying over spilled PR.
Advice to everyone: Get over pagerank, start doing something real, and adsense checks or whatever will then exceed 50 cents a week.
