If I was to get a backlink for my website from a content relevant site with a low page rank of 0 or 1, does the link still give my website promotional value because the backlink was relevant? Also the site that I would backlink to has lots of backlinks itself and lots of Indexed Pages.
Getting relevant backlinks is good. Also, remember that a lower PR backlink now may rise in value later.
Every link counts. You want your link building to look natural to the search engines. Having many low pr backlinks is natural. Look at it this way, the toolbar displays the past pr of the site. If the owner of the low pr site is actively promoting it, their pr will increase as well. So your link would benefit even more further down the road. If it's a relevant site, then you may get some traffic from that backlink.
I have several link pages bookmarked that have sites worth visiting. Most of these link pages have low (or no) PR and they have still served me well. In some instances I have linked to the sites linked from those pages in my blog, or on my forums. The fact that those low PR pages have generated additional links should certainly be viewed as a good thing You must also keep in mind that the people reading those link pages often have no clue what PR actually is.... in fact, outside of webmaster circles, most people don't even care, or don't know what that little green bar means. I have a friend that once thought that the green bar meant that the page they were viewing was working (lol). Seek links for quality and traffic, ignore all of the rankings, as they are secondary.
having a backlinks with a low pr is a crucial decision to make. most of the time the effect of this could drag your site down, but no one knows when the next pr update comes this will go up to pr4. so its up to you on how you use the negative turning into positive for your site. good luck!
If this question had been asked before Oct 2007 then may be no. But for now - Yes! Low Pagerank doesn't mean low quality as always. You will see many major sites/directory dropped in PR and that made you confuse if link come from those site still value or not. My answer is, as long as those sites/directories maintain their editorial and quality guideline (not list every paid site/not link to low quality site/not link to site which using black hat technique/not link to site which is not relevant) then those site still have great value (under low PR). However, this is just my assumption so it's up to you to believe it or not.
Especially with Google, relevance seems to be the key. Sure we'd all like PR8's, but hey, our world has successful PR 0's and 1's too!
The most important factor is page/site relevance to your page/site. Is the backlink related? If yes, then it is of value. If no, then the value is reduced and could even lead to penalties. Is the backlink nofollow? If yes, then the "juice" is not passed, but it would still be crawled, which is not a bad thing. Otherwise, a page with a PR of 0 is still valuable, just not as much as one with a PR of 1, etc.
One thing to keep in mind is that PR is just one of many factors to consider. If its low PR I would look at the site in question and spend 3-4 minutes and do some research on it. Some questions to ask yourself before attempting to get a link from the website: 1.) Does it have original content? Is it valuable to a visitor? 2.) Is there a lot of outbound links on the page? Does the webmaster keep the site clean and in order or is it spammy? 3.) Does the webmaster appear to spend a lot of time improving the site? Is it ever updated, and if so how often? 4.) Does Google crawl the site often? Is the page cached in google, and if so was it cached recently? 5.) How many back links does it have to that page/site? Use the Site:url operator in Yahoo to find backlinks. These 5 questions can give you an idea how valuable the link is. If the webmaster in question cares and values his site (and knows how to promote it) and it is valuable to visitors chances are the link will be valuable to you even if it is a PR0-PR1.
I agreed especially for #4. If that site/page has been cached more recently that shown a signs of quality in backlinks and update. Most of site which hasn't been cached frequently are lacked of update or don't have strong link enough. I have see many pages with PR 0 or N/A but has been cached more recently. As I said, PR doesn't all matter of quality.
