I've a unique site (small but profitable niche) and I would like to know some of the ways you guys and gals promote them.
Hi, there are many different techniques available, generally speaking, you want to try and find quality, high PR, relevant backlinks to your site, whether it be with larger, more broad sites, directories (site and article). Social Bookmarking is another handy one Hope this helps
Do some SEO, Directory submission, blogging, social networking, like myspace, adlandpro, direct matches, article writing, then submit then to ezines, PPC, paid advertising, ect ect
In many cases it can really depend on the niche involved. Though, one way that seems to fit regardless of niche is getting quality and related links pointing to your site. If your niche has a local focus, then also promote it through local facilities. News papers, billboards, fliers, handing out business cards, pens, and the like. Wearing a teeshirt with your URL on it can also help...Online though, Desray gave a few good ideas.
I have a new site aswell, a discussion board about the Montreal Canadiens (see sig). I am offering a pair of hockey tickets as a draw this month to encourage posters (every post gives a chance to win) but my problem is I'm having a hard time making people know about it. Any ideas how I should advertise to my target market? Obviously geo-targetting is quite important here..
See the second part of my post above yours... It only costs a few bucks to put an add in the paper classified. Though, you may wish to give up a bit more cash and actually get it in the sports section. Also, give a teeshirt away with the tickets that give your site URL The winner might actually wear it in public

I don't rely in one source of traffic because different traffic sources provides different type of benefit. the reason we need to have traffic in the beginning is not to make a sale but to study how actually people react to our site. experience in this area is critical before we go full blown campaign. what is the point to get 1000 visit with no sale when with 100 hit we already has some idea that 1000 more of hit won't bring any sale.
I wrote an entry in my blog today about some other ways of getting extra traffic to my website as I am trying to promote one of my sites (not my blog may I add). Have a read about it here. There are a few useful tips in there which have yielded some good results
Article Marketing, Directory submissions, link exchange, hard work, persistence and fresh quality contents on your website for your visitors. Mix all these, and you have a great formula for success.
You could try some viral software. Get re-branding rights to some software, put your links inside. Make sure it's a good software, and give it away to people. Give it away in forums, social sites, where ever you can think of. Try and give it away to people in groups that would be most interested in your niche. My 43 cents worth! Cheers Davin
you might also try to add your page to a dedicated web marketing directory. i know for example projects such as the million dollar wiki or the homepage movie (which is for free which is great i think) - all of these projects might help you to attract attention and bring you at least a few visitors this way.
