I always viewed directories as tools for promoting a new site or optimizing certain keywords for existing sites. Which means -- SEO purpose. As Bob Mutch of seocompany told me once- there are 13 ways of SEOing/link-building a site and directories are just one part of them.

The benefit from directories are not direct - but long-term indirect benefit in the form of better SEO.

Direct traffic from directories are just a BONUS:cool:

Those who submit to directories thinking/hoping that their listings would send them good traffic are either Naive or cheating themselves.

Anyway, that my personal view - it does not have to be agreed by others -- isn't? :p

To answer the Q straight -- here I go for one of my site--

Total Unique visitors --5006 till 4 am -31st Dec .
    Total -- 9796

Top 3 directories that referred --

    www.web-directories.ws - 16X12 = 192/yr -- FREE of cost
    www.dirsurfer.com -- 15 X12 = 180/yr -- My buddy - no cost
    www.goguides.org -- 10 X 12 = 120/year - $70 permanent

So there is my point. -

How much does a hit cost for Google AdSense? Does it translate into revenue? Things to debate.

On the other-hand - my listing with GoGuides will remain there for many years to come and will consistently send me traffic. And those visitors will definitely be quality- because they are looking for directories.:)

If you want quick success -- then there are other-ways -- but those looking for long-term, permanent-consistent benefit will find directories still helpful.

There is no paid directory who can send you 100-150 uniques per day ! My lovely GOD ! Even if 1-2 unique visitors per day is much.

Not even DMOZ sends to much traffic.

So if you are submitting to paid directories for traffic, be very selective or you might get dissapointed. And by the way, there is no way to get traffic from free directories, that is for sure.

Be happy if you get accepted and that is it.

If you need a REALLY GOOD paid directory try www.directorydump.com ! It is the best advice you can get as submitting to a paid directory to worth.

since I got another one, I'll reiterate. Only newbs are still wasting time submitting to minor directories unless your site's target audience is "crap traffic" - because that's what you'll get. The person who started this thread threw out traffic numbers which mean absolutely nothing. Conversions and profits are what you should be looking at, period.

Neg rep all you want but I'm not saving up rep to buy anything so... you're still wasting your time :p

hmmm...this view is troubling. What it essentially means is that directories have no other purpose besides selling links to websites, and that no one actually uses them. Such a model is bound to collapse in on itself.

An example (hit me if I'm wrong):

You have an online shopping website.
You submit this website to quality directories.
If each directory sends you a visitor who will buy something from your site, is a major advantage for you. Even this won't happen...a relevant quality backlink never hurts. A higher position on SERPs won't mind you I think...and some little more targeted traffic from search engines would be the cherry from the cake.

    Thanks,
    hyper

If you were listed in 500 directories and you only got 1 visit from each per month, that's 500 visits that you weren't going to get without those listings.

Now, it is true that 'converting' those visits is the more important part of the traffic, but that's where your own site comes in to play. The directory sent you the traffic it's up to you to do something with it. The same can be said of social media. People see a lot of traffic but next to no conversion from it. It looks good in their stats results but in their sales figures it looks bad.

there are a lot of "buts" between the first time visitor and the final buyer

Happy cases are the best case scenarios.
