That is a major concern for those who rely on pre-setup OS

Do a research and you find forums devoted to WIN98, WIN95, WIN31 and even MS-DOS because these systems are still in use (unsupported). If XP is going to be retired, you will find XP devoted communities too.

    "wahhh cry......im so anti-microsoft!..."

typical comment from most users of dp yet they still use ms products. i'm so tired of people dissing ms products just because of the brand name...so retarded. seriously...grow up.

So what xp is obsolete . You wont see me using vista , even if they give me a free copy . It sucks big time.
I use linux too its good but xp is better , sorry guys i said it :p . And some of the major products only work on xp and dont work with vista or linux . So i say to hell with what microsoft says . ill stick to xp untill they make a wothy successor to xp .

Let me tell you, I was one of those people skeptical about how bad Vista really was.

I bought two computers this week, and within a day I was ready to throw them out the window.

I'm now reinstalling xp on both of them. If they abandon XP before Vista gets any better, Microsoft can expect a massive exodus.

You put people in too much of a squeeze and they will find any way out that they can.

The biggest problem is that not many people know about Linux, and almost everyone that uses Windows XP has a program they need on it to do work, not all of that stuff is avaliable to them on Linux.

I doubt that many people wanna get used to a new OS. Vista is not different for them since it looks just like XP does.

We will be able to run WinXP just fine for years to come.
It's a great OS, as far as they release hotfixes for XP, it will be a strong performer.

What? why did you said that?

I have over 13 years of experience working on servers on both platforms Windows Server NT/2000/2003 and Linux on ISP/Hosting environment.

My comment (and we are talking)... is about Desktop/End User OS environment, not enterprise.

People are so used and glued to Windows that refuses to learn other platform, even learn OSX.

    I'm not liking Vista...
But is there an upside to it's forceful entry into the market?
As one who dabbles in computer music from time to time I need a high spec machine.
Spec-wise, my fastest machine can't touch the cheapest Vista machines in shops today, yet those machines craaaaaawl along when performing the simplest tasks.

Can't Vista be stripped down to the point where it is still stable but not a total resource whore? Or can all Vista machines be wiped in order to install XP?
If so, I'm in for some big savings.

But does the "exppiring" of XP mean that I will be unable to register my XP installation if in a year or so I decide to format and re-install?

    Yup, agreed.

Cyber dorks have their own pop culture. This is usually a negative culture involving hatred for big successful companies they can't avoid--Microsoft, Apple, and Sony are good examples of this.

I'd bet over half of the people have never used Vista, or have used it for less than 6 hours. Things are reconfigured so learning the menu sets can be a bit irritating (like any OS) but people just don't have a couple days of patience to adopt a new OS.

I have used Vista since March and I have never looked back. In fact, I re-installed XP to see what the hype was (couldn't remember it being faster) and I regretted it every single day. XP is no faster (or MARGINALLY in some applications) and inferior in every other respect.

If you read non-partial OS security websites, you'll see Vista is INFINITELY more secure of an OS than XP is.

But like Valve-Hosting said, this is the typical cycle for Microsoft OS'. They are LOATHED on release just BECAUSE.

This time it's worse than usual... and I think it's because of the amazing skill Apple marketers have in manipulating people. Even Joe Public says Vista sucks when he couldn't even turn his computer on without a manual. I believe this is largely due to Apple's amazingly skilled marketing creating FUD about Vista.
