Help me chose between two options - domain and hosting

I blog for one year already and now I am prepared to move on my own domain and host service. I read lot of threads on different forums about domains and hosting, but it seams that people here give the best answers. Most of the others are too much "expert" style for me. Most of the time I don't know what they are talking about.

I would like your opinion. I don't want links to referrals or coupon sites, because I just need answers to my dilemma. If I like some honest answer I will probably PM that person for some link, which I don't want in this thread.

After I read almost every thread I would like opinion and explanation why you think is the best:
    Should I buy:

    1. Bluehost hosting plan for $6.95 and I will get free domain. (I would like to know if this domain is for life. If they suspend my account (CPU usage or something similar) can I take that domain with me or it stay with them)

    2. Godaddy domain and then buy BlueHost hosting plan for $6.95 and then point my domain to Bluehost (I will be owner of domain)

What will I do: I will have wordpress blog and intend to gain around 3000 unique visitors per day. I don't make much money on the web and this price range for hosting is my maximum wright now.

Oh, yes another thing! If they suspend account. Will I get my database. So that I can upload it on another host.

I would like opinion from readers of this forum and I would like to thank all in advance.

I chose Bluehost, because my company use them. But we don't have much traffic on hosted site and everything is O.K. so far!

I would go with the second option - register your domain with Godaddy and you can always point it to a different host if anything happens.

As for databases, I think every host does a backup and it's also good to do a backup yourself regularly.

    Good luck!

Yes, exactly. With Bluehost you get a lifetime free domain name, but only as long as you host it with Bluehost.

    Hi,

second option is best. At GoDaddy you can get cheap domains, and changing the DNS of the domains is for free. So you can swith hosts as much as you like.

About bluehost, i dont know if that is the best option. You said you didnt want links in this thread so i am not giving it to you. Just visit site5 dot com and see for yourself what you can get for 5$, i figure thats a way better deal ;)

    good luck with it!!

(and btw a free domain... that should not be the reason to get hosting, it is only 66 cents per month if you get a .com for year...)

I agree a free domain shouldn't be the deciding factor in choosing a host. However Bluehost is a great choice if you decide on them. If you end up ever leaving a host that gives you a free domain you can take the domain with you. It's just not free anymore.

Personally, I'd go with Name.com to reg the domain for $5.39 with the 10% off coupon code in one of my previous threads then use Bluehost if you want them for hosting.

Bluehost may be one of the good ones, I do not know.

But it is a bad idea to get your name from your host. Your advertising -both any paid ads you do and what you build up over time by having an active webste - is all pointed to your domain name. Lose the name and you lose a lot, if not most, of that built up traffic. Some hosts will hold your name hostage trying to keep you as a customer. And even if they don't play games, it is no fun to need something from a company that you are leaving.

Godaddy is an OK registrar. Namecheap is another. I have no information about name.com, but they appear to be selling domains below their cost so they have to be making money some other way.

I am little confused wright now. mickess said that I can take my domain name if I decide to change my hosting company for whatever reason, but accentnepal said that I could have problems with domain transfer.

I understand that I have to pay for domain if I transfer my web host, but who I have to pay domain name? Web hosting company that give it to me or I have to pay someone else?

If this represents "big transfer problems" then I would rather chose option two. I know that option two is slightly more expensive, but I want best for my money and don't care about few dollars more. If price is around $10/month. More then $10 is way to much for me wright now. I earn approximately $100-$150 a month now and $100 a month for server will be way to much for me ;)

    >>> 1. Bluehost hosting plan for $6.95 and I will get free domain. (I would like to know if this domain is for life. If they suspend my account (CPU usage or something similar) can I take that domain with me or it stay with them)

Domain is for you as long as you host with them. The moment you stop hosting with them, you will have to pay a price for the domain - it is usually higher than the well known registrars.

    >>> 2. Godaddy domain and then buy BlueHost hosting plan for $6.95 and then point my domain to Bluehost (I will be owner of domain)

I suggest you to buy the hosting plan with a domain which you may or may not set up website for it. Important domain names could be kept with any other trusted registrars.

    >>>> Oh, yes another thing! If they suspend account. Will I get my database. So that I can upload it on another host.

You can take the backup of you database from time to time so that there is no hassle when you suspend the account. After the account suspension, you may find a tough task getting the database.

    I hope it helps you.

    All the best,

If you get your domain with Bluehost and then will transfer it to an other web host, you will have to pay about $7 - $10 I think to Bluehost and another $7 - 10 to your new domain registrar or web host (correct me guys if I am wrong).

The best way to go is the option 2 and I think many webmasters do it this way (including me). You just get complete freedom and you can change your web host anytime without the obligation to transfer your domain name and paying any additional fees.

As for the costs, a domain name with Godaddy will cost you $7.15 per year (using a discount coupon OYH3) and you will pay for Bluehost hosting $6.95 per month I think (if you decide for Bluehost).

I bought my own domain at Godaddy today. I used your code for discount, but it only increased final amount from $64,95 to $70,45. I don't know where is the cache?

I bought hidden status for Whois site. Domain was $20 and hiding was additional $50. It is very expensive. This is for 2 years.

I will bought Bluehost hosting plan. Is it good to take their free domain name and add my own domain latter. Does this cost anything (putting my own domain as add on domain to hosting plan).

I will have two domains that way:)

    No, that's free. :)

However, you paid $50 for the whois cover? That's quite strange. You could get a domain with the whois cover on Namecheap for less than $10. Haven't you bought anything else on Godaddy - e.g. their hosting?

I am not so sure. I think it was called private protection. I think it was for domain cover.

Do you or anybody else heard about BlueFur - Canadian hosting company? I would like more informations about them, because they look quite good company and as I looked their plans they are not overselling. I think hosting plans really look the way they offered it. 1000Mb space and monthly 50GB transfer for $6.95.

I recommend keeping your domain and hosting separate.

Better check their ToS. Most probably they will not allow you domain transfer till you pay the cost of domain.
We have very bad experience after registering one domain with them though this registration was just to check their services as claimed by their agents/affiliates on various forums.
You can register domain from idnrs.com and go for hosting with 1websiteshostingpromotions.com
Most probably NOT as backup is your responcibility OR they will ask money to provide you back-up.

    Good luck.

Toniya thanks for your response. You provided me helpful informations and I saw few mistakes that I already made.

I already have domain with them. I hope they will provide reasonable price if I wont to transfer domain.

Another thing is database backup. I will try to do it myself.

    Thanks
