Good luck everyone...especially to me To rank for the term change your title so that the keyword seocontest2008 isn't in there....thats my best advice After all, you don't want to over optimize or the search engines might think your spamming...
If you want to rank for something like that, try a long tail phrase Something like SEOfinkleandeignhornContest2008 Then you'll be sure to get #1 ranking! The only downside is, nobody will really know to search for that UNLESS you spread lots of word of mouth, promotion. Might be easier to just make a website that specializes in one thing. Give it a crazy branding name like Wallafoozer.com or somethin. and then give REALLY good deals on whatever youre selling or doing to build your niche awareness. Take a hit in the wallet over the deals. but make it the same or cheaper than what it would cost to pay for large scale promotion. Then the people get used to coming to your site for that one thing that was a freakishly good deal. they tell other peoples where they got it etc. then you add the next and the next. slowly decreasing the losses in the deals you give as the popularity of the name grows. If you do it good, then by the time youre done, people will be saying "just go to Wallfoozer.com" and then when you have people going to your site out of a first thought and trusted response, you can get advertisement to pay for the loss you take in giving deals. That strategy is probably the corporate cookie-cutter in many ways and for the heck of it ... Where did you hear about Google? do you remember when you first heard of it? - I dont know of anyone that found google through a mail spam or through an advertisement. Most people you talk to heard of it from somebody else o nthe Internet - "just go to Google..its a search engine"
You are missing a big point here. It is a contest for a short time of period, no long run, no need of someone to search for that keyword. The only thing partecipants need to do is to rank #1 for that (intentionally chosen, no competition) keyword (SEOContest2008) within the given timeframe to win the price.
I was looking for one of these in September last year, now I am really busy I may not have time to do it. But could be fun!
I like your domain I am using a cheapo blogspot one due to being rather late in the game. its blank at present SEOContest2008 but will be useful to try a few things Im curious about the results of. All ethical of course
