Yesterday, the Iraq Survey Group, the group charged with searching for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, delivered an addendum to its final report. At a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars and the lives of four U.S. military personnel, the group ultimately came to this conclusion in its final report: Iraq had no WMD or concerted WMD-related programs prior to the U.S. invasion in March 2003. The addendum released yesterday closes the door on other theories regarding Iraq's WMD capability.


Iraq Survey Group (ISG) finds no evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime transported WMD to Syria. In the aftermath of the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, as it became clear that there was no obvious evidence of Iraq's alleged WMD stockpiles, some began to suggest that Iraq had covertly moved all of its stockpiles and equipment to Syria. The ISG report addendum rejects this theory: "It should be noted that no information from debriefing of Iraqis in custody supports this possibility. ISG found no senior policy, program, or intelligence officials who admitted any direct knowledge of such movement of WMD. Indeed, they uniformly denied any knowledge of residual WMD that could have been secreted to Syria."

ISG debunks Bush Administration's assertions about Iraq's pre-1991 WMD stockpiles. Prior to the March 2003 invasion, the Bush Administration bolstered its case for war with Iraq by claiming that the stores of WMD built by Iraq prior to the imposition of sanctions and inspections conducted by a U.N. monitoring team in 1991 continued to pose a threat to the United States. In fact, President Bush said of these stockpiles, "Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard, and VX nerve agent. In such quantities, these chemical agents could also kill untold thousands. He's not accounted for these materials. He has given no evidence that he has destroyed them." #(State of the Union Address, 1/28/03)
In contrast to such assertions, ISG has found only "small numbers of degraded chemical weapons," which "were likely abandoned, forgotten and lost during the Iran-Iraq war" and "do not pose a militarily significant threat...because the agent and munitions are degraded." Moreover, "ISG has not found evidence to indicate that Iraq did not destroy its BW weapons or bulk agents."

Final ISG report concludes that Iraq had no WMD or active WMD-related programs. The Group's final report, delivered in September 2004, uniformly rejected the Bush Administration's claim that Iraq was pursuing weapons of mass destruction and, therefore, posed an imminent danger to the United States. The final report found that Iraq had: ​

• No nuclear weapons. "Saddam Hussayn ended the nuclear program in 1991 following the Gulf war. ISG found no evidence to suggest concerted efforts to restart the program."
• No chemical weapons. "While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991. There are no credible indications that Baghdad resumed production of chemical munitions thereafter, a policy ISG attributes to Baghdad's desire to see sanctions lifted, or rendered ineffectual, or its fear of force against it should WMD be discovered." (Emphasis removed)
• No biological weapons. "ISG found no direct evidence that Iraq, after 1996, had plans for a new BW program or was conducting BW-specific work for military purposes. Indeed, from the mid-1990s, despite evidence of continuing interest in nuclear and chemical weapons, there appears to be a complete absence of discussion or even interest in BW at the Presidential level."
• No mobile biological weapons labs. "ISG thoroughly examined two trailers captured in 2003, suspected of being mobile BW agent production units, and investigated the associated evidence. ISG judges that its Iraqi makers almost certainly designed and built the equipment exclusively for the generation of hydrogen. It is impractical to use the equipment for the production and weaponization of BW agent. ISG judges that it cannot therefore be part of any BW program."
• No plans to re-start WMD programs. "The former Regime had no formal written strategy or plan for the revival of WMD after sanctions. Neither was there an identifiable group of WMD policy makers or planners separate from Saddam." (Emphasis removed)

Bush Administration continues to spin the truth. Rather than taking responsibility for its many mistakes, the Bush Administration continues to spin the truth about Iraq's lack of WMD. Yesterday, in response to the release of the ISG report addendum, Defense Department spokesperson Bryan Whitman stated that Saddam Hussein "retained the intent and capability and he intended to resume full-scale WMD efforts once the U.N. sanctions were lifted," and that the ISG report "provides plenty of rationale for why this country went to war in Iraq." ​

The war was not for oil - it was for the sake of the U.S. dollar - which appears to be a lost cause anyhow.

Now you claim that in fact the WMD were a complete lie. I think there has been enough evidence posted in here to make a ruling on three things.

#1, some evidence of WMD was indeed found.
