How will the Microsoft + Yahoo merger affect the directory sector?

Discussion in 'Directories' started by Ibn Juferi, Feb 1, 2008.

I guess most of you would know by now about Microsoft's offer to buy out Yahoo Inc in order to acquire their brand as well as other products that come with it. I for one am a bit excited about it if this merger does go through because it is possible that it will break Google's monopoly on search and perhaps Google will think twice about penalising directories and bullying them into submission. So I wonder if this sentiment is shared by all?

    Let us discuss the issue.

I think there will be no major changes. The general rule is simple : the search engine who has the power and it is considered number one & establishes the game rules.

I dunno if I should be happy or not about the merging because Microsoft is capable to screw everything up & then Google will be your God, and you should kiss his ass very gentil to get found on the web.

A merger between msn and Yahoo could be a way to create a company which could better compete with Google. That would probably be a ways down the road and a offer to buy is a long way from an actual merger.

Niether MSN nor Yahoo were able to compete against Google as individual entities, merging them together wont change anything. IMO.

    Lets put this in numbers.
If both MSN and Yahoo competed and nothing happened then an outcome of 0 would be put in place. Therefore 0 + 0 = 0.
Silky is right there won't be a change.

even IF there is a merger it could still take 6months plus
I also dont see any fast way to take away googles dominance even if they come together
we will have plenty of time to adgust if we have to

I dont think this is of search engine results being a matter of major concern. I think this has to do with the ads network. Afterall, What exactly did you guys think runs and makes google money? You guessed it; the adsense shit.
With microsoft acquiring yahoo and the whole !YPN, I see this as a stepping stone towards a more competitive search engine ppc campaigning venture. I hope it goes through as I would like to see a non-monopolized ads campaign/SE combo. Regardless, I get traffic from all three major SE's without ads, so win, lose or draw, I stand idle in the midst of this all.

    Hello....

    Dollars and adsence nothing more...

MSN will now get a bigger slice of the pie in searchs as well as ad revenue
    nothing more then that ;)

But i do believe that MSN is now literally being the bully as it took
Facebook from the grasps of "G" and now as soon as G" was about
to negotiate a buyout of yahoo, MSN again steps in and slaps "G"
in the chops by offering a huge chunk off money for yahoo...

cant see how google would be allowed to buy yahoo anyway
the fact that google is so big will only improve the chances of a buyout for ms though

I think Yahoo will start taking directory submissions seriously and decrease their premium submissions prices too!

For anything, Google will be Google for us.. and how much ever we bug about google, we are going to follow its rankings and move ahead in the directory world.
    Merging won't affect much.

    All I know is this-

You will pay to appear on search engines, if not you will never appear anywhere near the first or second page. This is why PR will no longer be such an issue for all us. Enjoy your free traffic while you can because it will not be the case in the near future.

I know there are many issues that needs to be clarified, this is why it has not been done by major search engines yet,(except few ones) but don't worry it will happen.

Can't wait, because they will be signing their own death warrants if they go down that road.

it won't affect much, yahoo is a big portal with huge traffic, msn will cash on it! msn + yahoo will have a slightly better control of search market or ads market! still nothing in comparison to google!

Still i don't see the deal goes through, msn is very much interested, but yahoo will sure deny it!;)

I don't think that is accurate, MSN has 10% of searches, Yahoo has 20% and Google around 60%...so together they get closer to being a legitimate competitor for Google. I don't think this merger will have any effect directly on the directory industry but it does put both those companies in a better position to challenge Google, which is a good thing IMO.
