Hello, anyone tried when hostgator isn't good enough to handle image hosting page? I mean how much pictures/vistors shared hosting can handle ? ( i thinking about bigest package ) Thanks.
Actually, most hosts will not allow image hosting unless you purchase a dedicated server plan from them.
I am an author of an image hosting related eBook (www.ImageHostProfit.com) As of the time of authoring my book, yes, you can host your image hosting site on HostGator if you are on their 'SWAMP' plan. You can consult HostGator for further information. Appreciate your post, Syed Sameer
I imagine that most shared hosting accounts would be forced to upgrade as an image host site gains a bit of popularity, you could probably start off fine with some of them, but i guess it wouldn't be long before most hosts insist you go for dedicated. Im with hostgator, i haven't checked that about not allowing image hosting sites.
Image hosts expand very fast and can use 100Gb+ bandwidth in a day easily. Plans such as Hostgator's are oversold. If the whole server was making image hosts, they wouldn't be able to cope. Simply find a host who does not over sell, or buy a VPS or Dedicated machine.
Seriously? 100GB daily in bandwidth? blimey So if someone was looking at file hosting as in rar, zip files your talking much much more demanding still, with the files being larger.
Yeh, images are hotlinked around. They spread fast, especially if it's a funny image or something like a rare photo of a president swearing or something
Wow, i can see why dedicated would be quite neccessary then, im forgetting how quickly images can get shared around as you say.
I have my sites on VPS. Its cheaper than a dedicate server, but more powerful than a shared server. If your interest in a VPS, PM and we can talk about the details.
So you say HostGator doesn't allow image hosts because of their high server usage when they get popular. So I can start with them first right? When will be the right time to switch to bigger host (VPS or Dedi)? On how high daily bandwidth usage is reached?
I imagine that when your site begins to stuggle to cope with increased traffic and usage on the shared and that you know that its down to increased usage that that would be the time to plan your upgrade.
If you start with HG then get big quick enough, they will most likely suspend you and interrupt the service driving your traffic away. As for FDC, I had a very bad experience there.
I reccomend starting out with Hostgator. They are a superb host, but the shared plans are oversold a bit. Once you site gets too big for them move on to a dedicated server
