Other extensions, are they worth it?

Is it worth registering domain names with these extensions:-.info, .biz, .name, .ws, .us, .cn, .cc, .tv, .co.uk, .eu.

As all the .coms/.nets/orgs have been taken, I feel that one could probably still get some decent domains with these extensions. I am looking long term, possibly 3/5 years ahead. Making sites now and just leaving them to tick along. Who knows what the future holds.

Also, are they search engine friendly?

My personal opinion using a scale of 1 (worthless) to 5 (great)

.com (5), .net (5), .org (4), .info (3.5), .biz (2), .name (1), .ws (1), .us (4.5), .cn (2), .cc (1), .tv (4), .co.uk (5), .eu (3).

 

Surprised you put .eu so low. Certainly at the moment there isnt much value to them and there is a natural language issue but in the long term I think it will be growing in time.

 

Some people think search engines are totally neutral to all TLD's...
...others will say .gov and .edu are favored.

 

I own .vc and Am Proud of it

 

.in is Also great, I'd rank it 8/10

 

i think .ws and .name have no value at all and should be ranked less than 1....

 

From a SEO point of view, extention doesn't matter.

As to potentially investing in extensions, depending on the quality of the name, I'd say yes to:
.info, .us, .cn, .cc, .tv, .co.uk

And no to:
.biz, .name, .ws, .eu

 

There's all sorts of myths about engines preferring one extension over another but htmlindex is right they have stated several times that their algorithms are essentially gtld agnostic.

.info has the most potential long term but it is currently a thin market at the moment compared with .com and .net


I think long term the most important criteria will be -

Critical mass - i.e. is the extension known? AND

Does the domain and extension have semantic meaning
i.e. example-charity.biz or cheap-phones.org are awkward for some users if you develop a site


ccTLDs hugely shrink the number of people iin the market place for your name, however they can work well in search engines within that one country. .tv is perhaps the exception as advertising pushes it under the noses of lots of people who don't know much about domains or the internet in general, having said that the registry is very commercially run compared to other extensions.

Coming from outside the US I'm surprised that .us hasn't taken off massively, it shows how difficult it is to change once the others are established.

 

I think it really it is more important to find the words you want in the name but we all usualy start at dot com and work through other tld's until one is found. I have a website Organic.gd & im proud of it & of course I would have rather got the .com or .net but this was my only option unless the name is changed. All tld's have their fans, some people love cc, some love .mobi & others prefer .info .
