Thats actually a smart decision for both Yahoo and Microsoft, maybe they can turn Yahoo around.

I use Yahoo products such as del.ico.us and flickr and I hate MS. From what I have seen from MS everything they buy that I like they somehow find a way to maul it over until its a sad version of its former self. They may be a great company but I have nothing but contempt for the products I have used from them.

As for the offer I think it is in MS best interest to buy out Yahoo, and it is likely an attractive offer as Yahoo just reported unfavorable numbers for 4Q. Supposing Yahoo did decide to merge/sell it would be in MS best interest to hold ownership only and let Yahoo run as it has with only slight modifications. This would be a better investment as a diversification instead of being absorbed by MS. Despite how horrible Yahoo may be in the market it is still a very well known brand and attracts business that MS might otherwise not have.
Acquiring Yahoo would give MS a boost in its portfolio, some extra income, and added market share but not greatly effect its assault on Google as for the time being Google seems a step ahead in their core business. If the offer presented its self I think Google would probably be interested in Yahoo for its portfolio as well.

WRONG. This is a free market system. Monopolies created out of legal methods means that they are doing it more effective than anyone else. If they falter then competition will arise and smash them.

Yahoo won't sell. They have no logical reason to sell. They are the most populated website in the world.

problem with yahoo is, they try to do too much at the same time. Their social network (yahoo 360) and music network (launch) both failed so bad. Now with MS, they are going to do more, which will make it worse.

and will they merge the service? since many of MSN's service is duplicate as yahoo service, should they keep two team of ppl and compete with each other? That will be a big headache

btw, this could be the name for MS+yahoo, MAHOO

I don't quite follow how they would be competing in a negative way against each other if they both are owned by the same company. Each has its own user base and profitable ways to exploit it. Just taking into account advertising there are a lot of advertisers who have both Yahoo and Adcenter accounts respective individual budgets, merging the two won't necessarily compound those budgets into one. Case in point Yahoo and MSN Messenger each run their own ads and so many people run both at the same time that merging the two would cut the amount of ads being served in half. If say you have a clicking chatter on each at the same time you have the opportunity to serve two different ads at the same time and hope that they are both clicked which would give you the possibility of two commissions rather than limiting to one.
There are also people who use Yahoo mail who would rather just go to Gmail than convert to some form of Live. Each system has its own fan base and a lot of their base uses them for some reason vs the other, if they use both thats more bang for your buck as far as advertising goes.

wow, that would be a big change for the market, but there'd be a big mess, like, integrating adsense/ad center, the search thing, but well, I think that'd be a positive thing, can't wait to know of they will accept it or decline it :)

I hope they will leave the del.ico.us and flickr brands as they are, I was afraid Yahoo is going to ruin flickr when they bought it, but the best decision was made to leave it as an independent brand

HA HA, you talk like you just stepped out of business school, economic theories are great the real market is not that black and white...
