MSN/Yahoo together could put a lot of pressure on Google. Another strong player in the market could make payout for clicks go up or even force some transparency. MS can afford to compete by giving higher payouts.

Heres my 2 cents.. Microsoft hasnt been doing particularly well the past few years, neither has Yahoo. I dont know what type of resources Microsoft has but 44bln is a lot - how is it justified. Does Yahoo really profit 44bln worth of revenue in the scope of a few years? I doubt it.

To be honest, Microsoft and Yahoo are old news. The kids growin up today have no idea that those companies were around in the early 90s. Its old news. Even though Yahoo is currently #1 alexa and has been for a long time, I think its time is coming to an end soon. Sorry Microsoft but I think you're just wastin your money.

I personally do not believe that google will have much competition. Personally I believe that they will be ok for the most part. Im sure once Microsoft buys Yahoo, google will come out with something new. They seem to usually have something up their sleeves.

I don't know either but they didn't just dream that 44bn figure out of nowhere so there has to be some logic to their offer.

If it went ahead flickr would then become a Microsoft tool, del.icio.us would too... it can't be simply about making back 44bn revenue on Yahoo's current offerings but maybe it's about the data they'll get their hands on? They'd have a bigger base to flood and thus self-promote their wares to...

Google's growth threating Microsoft. MS already beaten by Google in Online Business.
now "Google OS" threatening MS Flagship "windows".

Considering the massive failure that Google Docs (their spreadsheet & wordprocessor) is, the thought of a Google OS is laughable (maybe if BeOS was still around and google bought them would I give them a chance).

No business in their right mind would use a new unproven OS, even if it was Google branded.

If the Justice Department decides that MSFT must divest of a search engine - which one do you think they will keep? MSN or Yahoo Search? This might be an opportunity for Ask to jump ahead in the game.

OpenID exists independant of Yahoo. It will continue to exist no matter what happens.

If you are talking about Passport vs OpenID, they can co-exist together.

Yahoo has a very popular website with tons of well known portals (finance, sports, fantasy sports, email, etc) but their online advertising presence is pretty weak - YPN is nowhere near as complex or well designed as Adsense. So Microsoft definitely gets something out of this deal, but I don't think it puts them close enough to Google to warrant the purchase price.
