I'm going to create my first App, which platform (FB or myspace) will provide the best return with advertising?
I think it depends on the kind of application you have, and how well you market the app - if you intend on doing any marketing at all. Obviously the more people that use your app whether it be on facebook or myspace will give you a good return regardless of which platform you use . Better yet, do both facebook and myspace.
I've read people getting good revenue from facebook apps, but that was the first few months of the API going live, now perhaps its too satuated to make decent money?
Any 'good' idea for an app will make money. It is true you probably have to be 'extra' good now to compete but it should not stop you if you have a good idea.
yeah but, there are literally 1000s of apps out there now, some of the most popular are simple text quiz games though and are not advanced. So does this mean theres no point doing a app unless its super advanced now?
You just answered your own question. If I were you I would do something simple first, like the popular ones you see, but make it controversial. And then move on to something more complex.
but if you go into the FB developer forums theres a lot of talk of how people are fed up with the simple text based games, thats why there was that petition to get a grading system put into it. I understand what you mean from the point of view of start with a simple app, but I think the free ride for apps is probably over, what would be interesting is if the same thing happens all over again with the myspace API.
I think that a great job can be achieved with FB. But you need to do some research first to know what will best work. I'm actually thinking about starting some app for FB too, I have already made my developer account and still searching for the GOOD idea.
yeah thats the difficult thing, finding a good idea for an app, because most of the easy to do ideas have already gone.
is there such thing as a free facebook app generator? I did a search, and found one that converts widgets to apps, but I'm looking for a quiz generator or something to that effect.
Myspace! It's new so less applications to choose from. Facebook is crowded with apps and they dont make that much money anyways.
exactly, thats the problem I see with FB, good API is now countered by satuation of the network. Myspace is just starting the problem though is that everyone is going to be jumping on that bandwagon too.
this thread revived my interest of myspace apps and I found this interesting article about from mashable about how myspace is going to help developers monetize their apps instead of letting them rely on ad revenue, like facebook beacon: http://mashable.com/2008/01/29/myspace-developer-platform/
well they don't say much in that article, other than they might be taking the advertising under their own wing, apart from that its all a bit vague.
Thats what I was asking with this thread ! , I think a lot of people don't want to talk about how and how much they are making with facebook app's for understandable reasons, but if you go to the facebook developers forums you can see some posts that will give you some idea.
I have over 50 apps in facebook, and 35 apps for bebo. I haven't started promoting them yet, and they're all really simple flash based apps. I'm using them for the sole purpose to let people know about my site which targets SN users. I have put advertising on them and currently I only make $5 per day from the apps directly, but it brings me quite a bit of traffic to my site and through that it's increased revenue on my website. I will start marketing my apps soon so I should see greater revenue from the apps and revenue on my website as the apps will hopefully go viral. So, maybe if you have a website you could use your app to make people aware of your site - that's my goal. Any revenue generated from the apps is a bonus for me.
thats a good idea, are the Flash apps you created actually loading any FB user info into the Flash .swf itself? (sorry to get techy!) some people on FB seem to be making good money though with apps.
