Well, i don't thik Americans are stupid. I would prefer to live there than living here in Greece.

But the examples you used on the first post, don't mean that Americans are smart.

all of you have good arguments however most of you are misinterpreting
the meanings of smart, successful, and success+smart

and the discussions got heated due to that.

smart: good at thinking, can ace in literature and scientific problems

successful: failure at first but from personal experiences, one is able to overcome the burdens and struggles and become successful

smart/successful: one does all the jobs and takes actions after careful thinking, and have success in the business.

and misinterpeted these meanings, and some are giving crappy/misguiding/unrelated examples.

 

I won't say all Americans are stupid. I have been on the Internet since late 1999s & it was all chat then. I am an Indian and I was/am quite surprised to know how Americans feel like us.

I wont say India is as superior as America, most of the Indians still live in villages and are not educated but the ones who are educated do know a lot about America.

I can say that most of the so called "educated" people in America have no knowledge about India or other Asian countries. I have come across people who still assume that we in India ride camels, have snakes as our pets and have animals all over the place. This tells me how limited knowledge Amercians have right now. I wont call this stupid but its the lack of eagerness to know about the other world....and this might consider them stupid.

I live in New York. Do you know how i go to work? Do you know what i have as my pet? Do you know what kind woman i screwed last night? Does that show how limited knowledge Indian have right now?

 

Well that's because the average population gets educated through the media. And when the media shows Indians as having snakes as pets, it's easy to understand where that misconception hails from. I bet you for most of you (not just americans) Romania is just a place full of orphans and fallen communist leaders

 

There are smart people and stupid people in every country. Also most countries have certain things that they are better at then others. I really think this is the worst thread I have ever seen here on DP.

My personal opinion:
It seems that Americans are always pretty far back on worldwide education, and It always seems there are surveys/videos/etc. showing how stupid americans are. Yet I believe that we are one of the most innovative societies around today. Take the internet for example, the majority of innovative things online have come through the Internet. We also seem to be doing extremely well in RnD, whether it be military/drugs,etc. I am also pretty sure that our standard of living is second to none....

So my question is this: Does it really matter If you aren't as smart as others (however you judge smartness), If you live successfully?

There may be 30% of students in my school with higher grades than me, but 10 years down the road I bet there will be <1% making more than me

 

Those videos question the geographical knowledge of Americans. Does knowing the capital of <some country> automatically make you smart? It makes you well-read at best, not necessarily smart. Similarily, NOT KNOWING that fact does not make you stupid, but maybe a bit ignorant.

Regarding the university and education discussion. I'm sure there are many countries with educational systems and universities just as good as the ones in the States. However, lacking the economical power of the USA, those countries can't provide the products of those educational systems the platform required to put what they learnt to good use.

I've witnessed classes at NY University and they're not better nor worse than how classes are taught here in Romania. But with the same knowledge, an NYU graduate will be able to do a lot more due to the economical power of the US than a graduate from a Romanian university will be able to do here.

So it's not really a matter of stupid/smart. The rich/poor comparisson would be much better suited.

 

I agree 100%. This thread is silly. To say anyone from any country is stupid is just ignorant. You're going to have good people and bad people, as well as ignorant and educated, no matter where you go on the planet. As far as the statements as to original Native Americans, slaves and all that, I'm part African American, and Native American. I also have Irish bloodline. I guess I'm just a melting pot. I still find it funny that racism still exists in 2008. You know, right here in my own damn country I get discriminated on regularly because of my ethnicity. The mixture doesn't matter. To some people, I'm just a n*&%er because all they see is brown skin. You know what my response is. They are just ignorant. I don't hate other races who some of their people may be racist towards me. Its about time, people realize that no matter what race, country, sex, or whatever, you're going to have good or bad people. If I was ignorant, I could say all caucasian people are racist, or bad, which would be 100% false. Some of my best friends were and still are indian, caucasian, greek, and other races and ethnicities. You can't let a few ignorant or stupid people be your gauge for a whole race or country. That is ignorant in itself. We should all take people on a case by case basis, and to quote Dr. Martin Luther King "We should not judge a man by the color of his skin, or in this case country of origin, but by the content of his character."
