Guess why they thought it was flat? Maybe cause the bible says it is? I find it sad you have to paste a list of non believers to prove your point. I'm also not surprised to see Kansas as the first state I saw...
Isa 40:22 [It is] he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof [are] as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: I find it sad you would leave them out
Thanks for finding the quote. A circle is flat. A sphere is the correct shape of the earth. I guess that's just a logical person talking. I'd paste a list of PhDs that believe in it but the forum wouldn't allow that much text at once.
Pardon me i suppose i should trust the interpetation of an athiest. Sphere is simply the 3d term for circle, most people do not talk in 3-d terms, someone asks you what shape is a box, instinctively you say square. In fact in those times there were no words to distinguis 3d from 2d
All I did was read what it says. No need to interpret it. It's you who is making things up. No, I learned the difference in 3rd grade. Right, I guess I'll just take your word for it. You call that a square? Are you blind? Wtf??
what did i make up? well good, now fourth wont be so hard look it up, i dont want you to take my word for it
a circle is in no way description of a sphere. a circle is a flat shape like a disk. only a moron or a poorly educated child would say a box is square. really? Isaiah 22:18 And roll you tightly like a ball, To be cast into a vast country; There you will die And there your splendid chariots will be, You shame of your master's house. don't you think that, Considering that they knew what a "ball" was, Ball would have been a far better word for describing the shape of the earth than the ridiculous, Inaccurate and incorrect word "circle"?
I found this thread fascinating...not for the content...but that you have the time to spend arguing. I respect anyone's decision to believe what they want. Free will and all that......
The word used means sphere the word in your verse: Isaiah 22:18 The word in my verse: isaiah 40:22 one is a shape, the other is a burning pile of wood Any questions?
I have to doubt the validity of any translation that equates circle with sphere and ball with bonfire. Seems to me that your translation is a result of people changing the content to make it seem less absurd. let me guess, Did you find that translation on a site that is devoted to explaining biblical verses that make no sense?
Not sure, mistranslation possibly, but by using the concordance and lexicon, we can study the use of such words to get a true definition. This is why context is so important.
You say god is supernatural and is above logic - that's why we cannot see him, that's why there is 0 evidence of him. But how is your god different from thousand others? There are many religions, smaller or larger, and almost each of them has its own supernatural being, creator, or anything. There were huge religions in the past and they dissapeared. All religions cannot be true. Why is it yours? Why? I'll tell you why. Because there isn't any god and never was. People have always been afraid of death and they tried to create a a god/gods so they could have lived forever in heaven and have eternal life. But that's just fairy tale made by people. Is there any religious person that has actually seen a god? Spoke with him? No there isn't. God didn't create people... people created god.
To answer you first question, why is my God the true God, look at it like this. I am Christian, The God i worship is the same God that Muslims worship, the same God Jehovah Witnesses worship, our details are a bit different, but its the same God. There are many other examples also see here for more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_and_other_religions The religion is determined by the details. I believe mine to be true, because it comes straight out of the scriptures and prophesies, which date back to the beginning of time. Hundreds of prophesies in the bible have come true, including the exact details of the birth of Jesus. All in all its faith, Hope and Love. For your second statement, there is definitely a God. The druids came Before Christianity, which you can read about here http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/religion/sites/timeline/pages/religion_in_wales_1.shtml Christians were being killed for spreading what they knew, why would the continue? If you mentioned a God other than what was known to them as God, they would kill you, yet the first Christians stood their ground and died for God. What could make these people die for what they believed, they must have had on heck of a faith. Many men in Biblical times spoke with God, today he speaks through the holy spirit, that abides in us, he talks through our hearts.
Not only Christians died for their god. There were hundreds of martyrs from other religions before Christ and they also stood up for their beliefs. First Christians were being killed for their belief, for what they believed was truth. And when they got to power, guess what they started to do? They started killing people of other religions and beliefs. Christians were no different from others. Have you spoke with god, have you seen him? I guess not. You just have the "feeling" or as you call it "holy spirit" that tells you there is god. But if he really cared, he wouldn't need any holy spirit... he would speak with you in person.
the holy spirit is god, ever read about the trinity? As for the beginning topic about the year 2008 and what not, sorry but that has to be the lamest debate ive ever heard... saying its the year 2008(or whatever year) has nothing to do with religion. Its a date, a time, nothing more. everyone goes by it, things would be crazy if every religion had their own 'date system'.
I didn't start this topic So don't blame me. And I know what is trinity and all the stuff (I studied 8 years on christian high school and I am also very interested in the topic so I am reading numerous theological books in my free time). And yet... why does god need holy spirit? Isn't he god? Why doesn't he speak with people in person? It's just very confusing. All the religous dogma si so logically flawed, so much stuff is made up. We are in 2008 and people still believe there is an invisible man and that when they will worship him they will live eternal life in heaven... I can't imagine what will you do for eternity? I would definately get bored. If there is a god, he isn't playing fair-play... Why do you have "relationship with god" but I don't? Because you don't have any relationship with god. It's just indoctrination. Assumptions based on lies, no reason behind....
