I'm setting up a new campaign... and they want a minimum of $5-$10 PER CLICK. Yikes. Why is this and how can I lower it?

its probably because of the keywords your using. What are they?
Who are you using? Google Adsense?

You can fix it by adding multiple keywords to your current ones. Be specific.
    For example:

    If your keyword was: Cup
You can lower it by being specific and having "Red Cup" "Glass Mug" and ext.

Or you might have been mistaken. It might have been $5-$10 minimal spending money.

You need to be more specific with you thread, there is plenty of variations of things that can be making it 5-10 cpc. Heck you might be using a scam cpc site.

its a very lucrative and higly competitive niche then. only way to reduce the bid cost initially is to improve the quality score and optimize your landing page. as you continue your campaign and if your CTR is high, then google will reduce the bid cost over time to as much as 50%

That means your keywords+ads+landing page are not relevant to each other.

Don't forget to put your keywords in the ads and use them on the landing page.

thats is a possibility, but at the same time some niche just has high paying keywords. financial sector (insurance, home loan, refinancing, etc), some health related keywors can cost you over $10 per click even if you have the most relavant keyword and most optimized page with best QS

He's setting up a new campaign.....Think a bit, then write. You can't get slapped, before you start advertising.

You can if your domain has already been slapped, or if your account is flagged. A new campaign does not mean a new account or a new domain. Two people promoting the same keywords can have vastly different minimum bids. I am thinking :)

You second comment sounds far more informative ;) That explains much more, then just "You got Google slapped"......

    BTW
Yes, you are right. I always forget about account and domain history :(

If you are getting a very bad Quality Score when you create an account, then (since it can't be caused by the account's performance) and the advert text doesn't have THAT great an impact (at least directly - it affects your clickthrough rate), the problem will be with your website.

I would suggest reading this before going any further...

    http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=46675

    In summary

    1) You need relevant, original content.
    2) You need to be clear about what your business does, and have your contact details and a privacy policy clearly available on the site.
    3) People need to be able to find what they are looking for on your site.

If your site contains little of value to the searcher, no information about who you are, and lots of adverts, then Google will penalise you for it, as they want their users to find what they are looking for.
