Shopping Directory [ODP Data] - Any potential

Discussion in 'Websites' started by contentsis, Jan 27, 2008.

    I built the site primarily as an exercise in coding and all my modifications are based around an open source script.

    http://www.shopsmartr.com/index.php

    I would be very interested in anybody has any views on developing the site further and monetizing it, or, having learned what I set out to do, should I just can it.

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi, Went to add site, but your website states 'it is not about traffic it's about the link' I feel you are wrong. Traffic increasing sales potential, links buy nothing...well apart from being part of a traffic increase campaign...but links itself are not the answer...

    Hi Wood1e

    I should point out that it was the developer of LinkEx that worded the above statement and not myself, and I am sorry that on this occasion, and because of that wording, you feel unable to add your site.

    For me personally, it may or may not be about the traffic, I don't know. I do know though that I integrated LinkEx into the open source ODP project, which is what I set out to do :) and semantics about GUI wording aside, should anyone want you use it, it is there.

    The next step is to add the social bookmarking and the translate this page feature.

    Hi jigolo. Thanks for your interest in the site, but I'm really sorry to say that we're only adding commerce sites at the moment. Sorry

    Any potential? Always.

    A lot of these directory websites look very similar, and there seems to be heaps of them charging a fee to add you in. *sigh* Coming from someone outside of the US, I'd personally like to see it easier to add into a specific region. Maybe a map of the world with an easy way to select your region?

    Take a sideways step from the look and feel of a lot of these sites, and do some different things.

    It looks very neat and organized and it is very easy to navigate through and find what you want. Great job!

    Hi!

    I don't mean to be cruel but what I know is domains and I don't think that you've got a very good one. I don't know what ShopSmarter.com is but they will likely get a lot of your hits if any word of mouth or human memory is used to remember your site.

    While we all want a .COM, I'd suggest shopping around for another name. ShoppingSmarter.info, .us, and .co.uk (as appropriate) are available. Despite not being .COMs, I'd argue that they are all, while maybe not ideal, better. ShopSmarter1.com is available and while not good, it's better and may even be marketable ('Where the consumer is number 1'; whatever).

    Good Luck in any event!

    Best Wishes,

    Jon Hall

    Thank you for all your advice, it is very much appreciated.

    @radioz

    No problem about commenting on the domain, I know it kinda sucks :) Thanks for your advice though on alternative domains and if I develop the site further I may look into one of these. I guess my main concern is that it's never going to attract mass visitors because of it's DMOZ OPD backend (not sure how Google looks on these). I may add search results from other engines in the future in order to try and differentiate it from other ODP scripts.

    @abdul.pcet

    What type of site do you wish to add? Can you please give me the domain?

    Really it is just a duplicate of the shopping categories from ODP? If that is the case then I don't see any value in the site unless you add some custom content like product reviews, a blog or shopping advice articles and that sort of thing.

    good luck
