Estimating How Much Bandwidth I will Need

Okey I want to start a video site. (Not like youtube). It will be for a specific niche, that I work very close to. Most videos will be 60 minutes long. For arguments sake lets say after they are captured, and compressed, they will average about 250mb.

Lets say 5 new video are uploaded each day. And 100 people watch 5 videos each every day. And there is 30 days in the month.

    5 x 250mb x 30 = 37500mb of video = 36.62 gigabytes being uploaded each month

    100 people watch 5 x (250mb videos) x (30 days) = 3750000mb = 3662.00 gigabytes being streamed/downloaded each month

so what type of hosting would I need? Any other details I may be overlooking?

I suggest you to use your own dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth

There is no such thing as true unlimited bandwidth. If he uses too much bandwidth, those cheap 200$ A month unlimited bandwidth plans will kick him off

Dedicated server with 100Mbps Uplink will be needed for sure! I wouldn't do less then 2GB RAM server and you will need a lot of bandwidth. There are companies out there that specialize in media hosting.

A dedicated 100MBPS uplink will cost easily $1,000+ A month.

I May end up getting a 100MBPS dedicated, even though my average video size will be 20-40 mb or so. If anyone knows a good 100mbps dedicated host, let me know.

So I will need to pay $1,000 a month for the server?
    There is no cheaper solution?
Down the line (if my site is up fro 1 year) this may come out to $12,000 (probably more since I will be adding content and traffic will increase)

Any other solutions would be great!
    Thanks.

    "start a vid site"
dont go directly for high priced servers..
start with low and upgrade later

and make sure you are with the company that will move servers for you or make load balance and cluster as you grow.

I agree, I was reading through these replies and people saying $1,000 a month starting now is a bit ridiculous. You're apparently not going to start out with that traffic right away, so why waste money the first few months? Start out with cheap hosting, and then upgrade as you need to.

^ Correct! Start out with a small plan first, then slowly *SLOWLY* progress to more expensive, dedicated hosting plans
