They don't use it for the qorries, or their site would be complately down by now, no mySQL can take that many index's

    they must use cigi.

Thats a good question. I've never seen any script extentions on their URLs. Its just says
    google.com/search?q=hello+world

I don't think they would use PHP, Google SE was made way before that even existed.
As someone else said, I think their probably using a CGI script. Maby Perl, python, maby RUBY or something like that.

They probably use whatever is best for the project they have in hand, I have seen them using .asp on some of their sites, .php on others.

Well I know they use it for something on their site. It was mentioned that they use it when MySQL AB was bought by Sun.

i'm sorry to argue but it's not mysql for their main search engine, no way.

    mysql is so insecure, etc.

    Exactly what I'm thinking,
Google would not use mysql or PHP way to insecure.
Plus its a free scripting language and db software.

Google would most likely have C++ and python or something CGI scripts.

Google uses a mix of languages for it's various purposes.

    1. Orkut is in ASP.NET
    2. Google's Help System is in Python
    3. Definitely C/C++ for Searching
    4. Google's real strength is in CSS & JavaScript
    5. It uses AJAX to speed up what I think.

CGI is used at a lot of sites. PayPal(sister concern of EBay) uses it

Amazon uses CGI. Enter amazon.com/index.cgi to see yourself

And Python is a interpreted language as pointed out but it can be converted to native code & it can also call native code written using C++ (python code can also be called from C++).

Ya big sites would use the common gateway interface, you can do alot more with it. But it probably costs lots of $$ to hire people to write server side script in C++ or similiar to run on a web server through the CGI.

I heard somewhere that they are using Python but with the posts above, I think it's already confirmed.

You just contradicted yourself bud, Google SE was made way before PHP existed, what more with Ruby?
